Music has played a vital role in our society where it is a everyday occurrence for the most people. According to Norman M. Weinberger a neurobiologist, he mention that music do exists in every culture. Music has provide a natural and rhythmic way of learning. Most of the students listen to music to help them alleviate the emotions of the stress and anxiety when they are facing complex cognitive process like studying for a test, or completing assignments or either reading and writing . This practice has been common, that it can benefit whether it can determine the test score. Do music really helps to improve our concentration level while we are studying for a test ? It focused on the influences on how these two genres of music has influence on the performance and concentration. The participants had to choose/prefer their genre and were to request to repeat a set of numbers backwards while listening to either sedative, simulative or no music. The results were shown that the participants performed worse while listening to their preferred type of music. In addition, in the no music condition, the participants performed the best. By these results, it has indicate that preferred type of music can cause distracting factor , perhaps due to the attention is drawn to emotions, memories and lyrics where such music can evoke. Also, the participants who listened to the sedative music , had better performances than the participants who listened to simulative music and a worst than those who listened to the no music. From this results, it has been shown that simulative music is a stronger distracter than the sedative music while no music is the better performance. In an another study which was conduct by Miller and Schyb (1989) , they basically examined the effect on the background music in variety of standard cognitive tasks such as numerical, spatial and verbal reasoning and reading. These tasks were taken from Differential Aptitude Test Battery. In short, a brief explanation of this test, it intends to measure the aptitude of the subject in different area concentration. These tests includes seven classification which are Verbal reasoning, Abstract reasoning, Numerical ability, Language usage, Clerical aptitude, Mechanical aptitude and Space relation.
