Everybody loves pets. There are 79.7 million households in the US alone. That means in every 100 homes roughly 65 of them own some sort of pet. There are tons of different animals people keep as pets, from tiny leopard geckos to fully grown tigers. By far the most popular pets are cats and dogs. Out of the about 200 million pets in the US there are 70 million dogs and 74 million are cats. That's approximately 70% of all pets in the US. Sadly with this huge number of animals come with it a huge number of animals that are euthanized. Euthanasia is when you deliberately kill something (in this case dogs and cats) for a magnitude of reasons, but most of the time it's because they're too old or to end their suffering. While it is true that the current shelter animal population is too high, the best way to lower that number is through neutering most of the shelter animals. Neutering is when you make the animal unable to reproduce. After that the population would stabilize by itself. One of the biggest reasons that there are too many animals right now is that many pet owners refuse to neuter their pets. Some would say this would be too expensive, but the money used now would be nothing compared to the amount of money used to euthanize animals in the next five years. Plus, with fewer pets to worry about all the money that goes into animal control and other related services would go down. Another argument for euthanizing animals is that some will never be adopted, but that is a mute point. Most animals aren't adopted because they have behavioral issues. A lot of animals that are picked off of the streets are wary of humans. The longer they stay at an animal shelter the longer they have to adapt to being around people and other animals, so they have a better chance of being adopted.
