Arguments Against Just War

“Do not Kill the Soul sanctified by God, except for just cause” (5). In the quote taking directly from the Qur’an, can “just cause” and “just war” be considered an interchangeable phrase? Currently there are multiple Islam groups fighting under the concept of jihad and exploiting excerpts from the Qur’an to murder tens of thousands. The Qur’an, which is a driving force behind the entire religion of Islam, has many versus that can seem to argue for just war, while at the same time condemning it. Although there may be some excerpts that seem to justify the jihad as a killing of none Islams, the Qur’an certainly expresses religious tolerance much more than warfare. It is a text more than a thirteen hundred years old full of seemingly contradiction upon contradiction. That is why it is important to not take a single verse out to use as justification of the just war, but to use the overall message of peace, good morals, and war only when completely necessary. “Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors.”(2) This line is echoed echoed quite frequently throughout the Qur’an. Muslims do have a responsibility to spread the teachings of Muhammad and help those ignorant of Allah to learn to accept him as the one and only God. However there should be no unnecessary death or violence against those people who already have good morals and live a respectful life. “Fight those who believe not in Allah…until they pay the Jizya” (3). The Jizya is a tax that Muslim leaders forced non-Muslims to pay when they conquered their land. As we can see it is written in the Quran it is acceptable to merely collect an additional tax from non- Muslims rather than slaughter them.
