“In paradise there will be plenty of food, women, and houses made of gold and diamonds.” (Pg. 100, Satrapi). Subjecting to Muslim culture means submitting to Allah and being pure in he’s eyes. Once proving purity the rewards are the gifts that only Allah can provide in heaven. Food represents stability, women treasures untold, and gold for clarity and good fortune. The novel uses gold as a key to Allah’s paradise. Greater amount of red color on your hands opens the gate to his approval while being dead is equivalent to being lucky. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate the correlation between the symbolic meaning of the golden key and how religion creates a connection to the term gold in the novel Persepolis.

Marjane explains the pathway boys and men should take to find paradise by joining a war to slaughter many. The novel frequently praises martyrs (murders) in the country. In Muslim religion the Quran has over 100 verses that promote war. Islamic country’s placed in a fear of being sent to hell by Allah if they do not coalesce with the slaughter pool. “It’s nuts! They hypnotize them and just toss them into battle. Absolute carnage.” (Pg. 101, Satrapi). The shah promotes the same verses that the Quran tells about war. He successfully convinced multiple kids that war opens the heart of Allah and gives them the approval they need to go to the afterlife. “It’s awful. Every day I see buses full of kids arriving.” (Pg. 101. Satrapi). Men that were in the army reactions all in tandem were appalled that innocent boys was tricked into war for the promise of acceptance. The key itself shows the road to heaven and the golden color demonstrates the acceptance of Allah.
