In “The Managed Hand”, author Miliann Kang, brings us into the world of the nail salons of New York in an attempt to show us the coming together of multiple layers of intersectionality, gender, class, race and immigration. Kang brings to light a new service labor (body labor), an insight into the growing Korean immigrant community, the topic of racialized and gendered stereotyping as well as the inequality between women of different races and social status. Through this reading, we see that Kang works from the notion of Hochschild’s emotional labor; Kang takes it a step further and introduces body labor. In Anne Fadiman’s book, The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, two cultures clash with each other in the struggle to save Lia Lee, a Hmong child refugee with severe epilepsy. Although Lee and her family live in the United States, and thus receive medical care from Westerners, her family believes that Lee’s condition is sacred and special. The following miscommunications, both culturally and lingually, between the American doctors and the Lee family leave Lia Lee in comatose at the end of the book. However, Lia Lee could have been saved if the Lee’s had a better understanding of the American doctors’ intentions, and the American doctors understood the Hmong culture. Essentially, the tragedy of Lia Lee can be attributed to the clash of American and Hmong cultures at both the surface and sub-surface level.

Killing two birds with one stone is exactly what Florence Kelley does in her speech at the National American Woman Suffrage Association convention on July 22, 1905. Although it is idealized as "the salt of the earth", there is an inconsistence that workers are prevented from joining this field by family members (n.p). Being thought to be no-brain work, the author argued that trades turn out to require efforts, “metacognition”, and syllogism in order to “eliminate variables… The gap between theory and practice stretches out in front of you” (n.p).
