Concert Critique – Greg Billings Band The performers are Greg Billings: Lead vocals, Tom King: Bass guitar, George Harris: Guitar and vocals, Rob Stoney: Keyboards, vocals and harmonica, Mark Busto: Drums and vocals. Kyle Ashley: Guitar. The band today includes Greg and Tom from the original band Stranger. Greg is a friend of mine as well as a colleague.
America's bands became more advanced in many ways from the mid-eighteenth through the mid-nineteenth century. Music was first introduced to America when military bands were brought to America by the British Army. These military bands brought their music and marches to America. Military songs first gave influences to America when the Continental Army was designed. It was made up of regiments and companies and each company had 2 fifers and 2 drummers.
In technical terms, it’s a combination of dance, performance, and equipment that creates a visual accompaniment to a marching band show. To us, it is so much more. Our flags, rifles, and sabres are more than just metal, wood, and tape. They are our prides and joys, our security blankets, our babies. We spend hours perfecting tosses, watching silks swirl over our heads, making sure that we catch with our hands in just the right places.
A person isn 't just born the way they are today. They change themselves throughout their lifetime. Not only does a person grow and change physically, but their personality along grows with them. Through a person 's life they shape who they become to be based on past experiences. The reason that everyone acts differently is because everyone has lived their own life.
Last Thursday I attended the Jazz Concert with guest artist, Tony Miceli. For the first song five guys came out on stage. The five instruments being played were the piano, drums, trumpet, -----. They were all positioned very close together, I assume for the best sound. The song was called Secret Love and it last a very long time, about 10 minutes.
In Judith Jarvis Thomson’s “The Trolley Problem” two hypothetical cases are presented to the reader. The track in which trolley is running must stop to avoid running five men down whom are repairing the track. Due to failed breaks the trolley couldn’t stop and loses control. A second spur of track appears and unfortunately on this track has one worker on it and there is no time to warn both the five workmen and the single workman on the alternate track. If the trolley continues it will kill the five men on the track.
Marching band; copious amounts of people scoff at the sound of those words. I often hear students commenting on how easy marching band is, how we don’t train like the football players do. At Anderson High School, that’s not the case, the marching band trains for just as long. As a band of over 125 individuals, it takes determination, pride, and confidence to achieve the goals we have set forth to accomplish. As a leader of the saxophone section, I know what it’s like to face failure, to overcome and turn it into success and to march on with confidence.
The Santa Fe Evening of Jazz was a great concert featuring the Rhythm and Blues, Jazz Combo, and Big Band from Santa Fe College with special guest Professor Scott Wilson from the University of Florida Jazz Studies. This Evening of Jazz was the ninth one to be held and was superbly done; getting a ticket was quick and simple, finding a seat was as easy, and leaving was not hard. The whole performance was led by Doctor Steven Lee Bingham who also played with all the bands on the alto saxophone along with giving information about each band, song, scholarship players, and on Mr. Wilson and his unique instrument called a E.V.I.. The audience had a pleasant feel, everyone was talking and laughing before and after the performance, they also were
It brought a sense of suspense, with the opening bass drum so loud and firm, the audience jumped a little in their seats. You could envision war while listening to this piece, the stage was the battle field, the left side of the orchestra was the Axis Power, the right side was the Allies and the bass drum were the drummer boy. Fanfare for the Common Man was well put together, the orchestra sounded good even
To the average person, the high school marching band is nothing more than a bunch of geeks that play during half time at the football games or monopolize the benches by the band hall, but to me, it is so much more. To me it is a family, a safe haven, a creative outlet, a home. I have been involved in marching band for three years, going on four, and I wouldn 't trade the experience for anything. When I entered high school as a scared and awkward freshman, I immediately had three hundred people that I could rely on. The program quickly became like a second home to me and opened up a whole new path in my life.
With this hall being a decent size, the music really amplified through the venue. I felt as if I was listening to a recorded version of the performances, that’s how good it was. The audience must have felt the same way I did about the performances because at the end of the concert the musicians received a standing
Joining band had an immense and almost immediate impact on my life. Before being in band I had never had a talent that I felt completely confident in. I enjoyed practicing and spent many hours trying to improve my musical ability. In
I attended the Houston Symphony conducted by Andres Orozco-Estrada on Sunday, February 18th. It consisted of three pieces by the name of Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, Lago de Lagrimas Concert for Flutes, and Symphony no 7 in D minor, Opus 70. Overall, it was a great experience that I would definitely repeat because it was relaxing and peaceful watching the performance. The crowd was very respectful and the setting was professional and fancy. Everyone was nicely dressed and the workers were extremely helpful in directing the audience to the correct place.
There were many musical elements heard throughout these pieces and it was interesting to hear how they varied in each song and suite. In Intermezzo, it began with a quieter violin solo melody creating a monophonic texture. Soon after, it became accompanied by the other violins and cellos, then the full ensemble came in creating a moderate, flowing melody at about mezzo forte and switching to a polyphonic texture. Next, there was a harp solo at forte with many crescendos and decrescendos. The full ensemble enters again raising the dynamics to forte before decrescendoing and slowing down to end with a held note and final tone.
Attending my first jazz concert was an unforgettable experience of great live instrumental music. The concert was entertaining and a very educational experience of this course. As a student in this course with little musical education, I never appreciated instrumentals, until the SDSU Jazz Concert. This concert was a really enjoyable experience with the balance of all the instruments. I really enjoyed the experience and the knowledge of music I gained from the concert.
