Amy Seamon Period 2 12-21-16 Final Copy The copper, chromium and arsenic, CCA-treated wood, has been linked to certain types of cancer. The issue is that they need to remove that wood so no one gets hurt. The arsenic can come of on your deck when it rains so it ends up on your surface. It also can come off if your sanding. It’s easier for children around young ages (under 6) with hand and mouth contact to it. I truly believe that they should take down all standing structures made from CCA treated wood. The CCA does not think existing wood structures need to be removed because the EPA doesn’t recommend it; the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency, had said that amount is small that they receive and Florida panels have showed children do not …show more content…
Some reasons are some recent studies about it, and it ends up on surfaces or soil in surroundings. Some recent studies “…have confirmed that high levels of arsenic can be released to children’s hands by direct contact with arsenic-treated wood. Children under 6 are particularly prone to hand-to-mouth activity. Children are more vulnerable than adults because their brains and bodies are still developing and changing. Children may be at greater risk from arsenic than adults because their livers metabolize it more slowly.” Younger children have this better range of hand and mouth touching that could give them this if the CCA treated wood structures are not taken down. The bad part is, “The arsenic ends up on the surface of the wood or soil near the wood.” As simple as it raining the arsenic can come off the wood and end up on the near surfaces when children can pick it up and it gets on them. Lastly, “Exposer to arsenic can occur directly through skin contact with CCA-treated wood, or more indirectly through arsenic-contaminated soil, groundwater, or surface water.” The children at young ages will catch this if it is not taken care of. The existing structures need to be taken
