The citizenship requirement under Article 2 of our Constitution has been called stupid, un-American, and cruel. Why is that? Not just our country, but the world has so greatly evolved since colonial times. With such great advances in technology and communication, there are now aspects of our Constitution that no longer make sense or seem old-fashioned. The citizenship requirement should be repealed for a number of reasons, the most important including: (a) it is discriminatory, (b) it is outdated, (c) it does not truly determine loyalty and (d) it is undemocratic. Citizenship -- what is it? Discrimination is defined as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people (i.e. sex, race, skin color, religious belief, etc.). The 5th and 14th Amendments of our Constitution make it clear that this is wrong and punishable yet, in Article 2 Section 1, millions of Americans are discriminated against for their birth country. Again, like mentioned before, we live in a different time. Today, there are more terrorist organizations and foreign influences attempting to persuade U.S. citizens. For example, consider Edward Snowden, a former NSA contractor and CIA employee. Snowden disclosed confidential information to several media outlets and foreign countries, about the agency’s spying program. Though Snowden was a U.S. citizen, he did not show loyalty for his country, and instead, took refuge in Russia. Another example to be considered would be the many young adults and adults recruited to join ISIS. These citizens join willingly, abandoning their country. The Constitution sets up Article 2, Section 1, Clause 5 believing that a person’s birthplace is where their ultimate loyalty lies. Unfortunately, this is far from the
