The first event that led to the creation of many different political factions began from 1787 to 1815. It was known as the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation was first set in motion in 1781. The Articles of Confederation was created so that the government didn’t have all of the power. Since the Articles of Confederation split the power, 13 members of the federal government had was the right to declare war. The Articles of Confederation didn’t do too good, which led to some issues. For example, the United States was in a debt, there were many economic problems such as currency with no value, and that British goods were being brought into the United States at a fast rate. It all started when Martin Van Buren was nominated to be part of the Free Soil Party. He was an anti-slavery member of both the Whig and the Democratic party. Martin did not want slavery to spread in the West. Escaped slaves used Underground Railroads to escape to the North. Later on the black slaves uprised which led to the deaths of sixty whites. This was known as Nat Turner’s Rebellion. Nat Turner believed that god chose him to lead the Rebellion. The rebellion killed many whites but he was known for assaulting women and children. A movement that wanted to end slavery and make the Constitution illegal was the American Anti-Slavery Society. The movement was formed in 1833. William Lloyd Garrison was a prominent voice in fighting for slavery to end. Frederick Douglass was an abolitionist who fought for racial equality. A gag rule was created, and it made it so that people who went to the capital to end slavery were not given a chance too. A slave made an autobiography named Uncle Tom’s Cabin which was about antislavery literature. It was written by Harriet Beecher. Later on America went into the Mexican-American War. It occurred when Texas was annexed and when John Slidell was on a mission to buy California and New Mexico, but then the president of Mexico refused. Eventually the U.S. won over the states. David Wilmot was also someone who was part of the Free Soil Party. Henry Clay made a compromise between the North and the South. It was called the Compromise of 1850. Later on the Fugitive Slave Act 1850 was updated and it stopped the slave trade in Washington. This led to the popular sovereignty belief, which was that the people believed that the people they voted for run the government. Kansas and Nebraska were given the choice to have slavery or not.
