There are various purposes of art in our society. Our book, Artworks for Elementary Teachers, points out three purposes artwork may seem to serve. The first purpose, are serves society, states that “are tells stories about evens in history, myths, religion, and literature” (Herberholz 2). Art serves various purposes in society whether these purposes are to inform or move people or serve as a memorial, art can be displayed in many ways. The second purpose that our book states is that are can record images and provides expressions that an artist is feeling or imagining (Herberholz 2). Art can show us what places may look like or how people are feeling. Artwork enlightens our senses and ideas with the symbols artists create. The third purpose that the book states, art serves our functional needs, takes into consideration city planning, furnishing, containers, clothing, etc. (Herberholz3). Art tends to reflect on the culture’s society. Art reflects a culture’s ideas, values, concerns, either as an individual or group throughout the society. Each tribe teaches the cultural arts of their community and passes it on from generation to generation (Herberholz 4). Tribes do this because they share a sense of pride with the past and have a desire to develop deeper knowledge (Herberholz 4). An understanding of a tribe’s symbols enriches our appreciation of the art and culture that created the symbols (Herberholz 4). Some traditions may have ancient roots, but works of tribes are not replications of what was done before. Instead, they are creative interpretations of a culture’s beliefs and thinking, it is just represented in a contemporary mode (Herberholz 4).
