Stealing is like robbing your innocence from your life. The short story “Ashes” is a story about a divorced mom and dad with a daughter named Ashleigh. During the story it goes through the challenges the family faced. Ashleigh is faced with a big challenge: whether she should steal the 200 dollars from her mom for her dad or, not steal the money for her dad. Ashleigh did not take the money because her mom is a good role model, she knew her dad is not a good person, and she knew that stealing is not right.

Ashleigh knew her dad 's not a good person. First, in the story “Ashes” Pfeffer purposes, “When I was little Dad used to promise me the stars for a necklace, but like most of his promises, that one never quite happened.” (Pfeffer,1) This quote clearly represents how, Ashleigh 's dad can be seen unacceptable because it states that he never keeps his promises. Ashleigh knew if he says promises he will give the money back he really won’t because he never keeps his promises.In addition, Pfeffer states directly that Ashleigh 's dad never made her mom happy when she says, “But I was her only dream she ever believed in and once I failed her, she never let herself dream again.” (Pfeffer,2) Ashleigh 's dad said that he was her mom 's only dream and after him she never dreamt again, after all that has to mean something. Ashleigh has to know what her dad did to her mom for them to divorce and make her so unhappy. Furthermore, Pfeffer conveys, “In the cold stillness of the night, I could hear my father 's car keening in the distance. “You 're one in a million”, it cried.” “All right,” I said and reached to unlock the door. “You 're one in a million,” he said to me.” (Pfeffer,4) In this quote it shows how Ashleigh 's dad always calls Ashleigh “one in a million” in dire situations like when he wants things he uses it to flatter Ashleigh. He also, uses it to persuade her on his side. Ashleighs dad manipulates her. Now Ashleigh knew her dad 's a bad person, she also knew that
