In the short story by Susan Pefefer “Ashes,” is about a young girl, Ashes, who is in a middle of fights between her mother and father. Ashes mother, is a uptight, hard worker, that doesn’t have the biggest dreams. Ashes father, is a fun, dreamer, that has some holes responsibility wise. Ashes loves and trust both of her parents but, when her dad puts her in a hard position she questions that trust. This story shows, even if you’re are supposed to trust someone does that mean they are trustworthy?
From the beginning, Ashes trusted her father. She believed that maybe her mother was just mean, as shown in the text, “Her name is Ashleigh!” Mom shouted. “That’s just my nickname for her,” Dad replied.

Ashes notices her dad’s weird behavior and ask what’s wrong where he reveals he is in debt and needs some money. Ashes tries to brainstorm a way to get him out of debt, but the first thing that came to mind was her mother’s stash. Ashes tried to back out of it but it was too late.
Once they reach the apartment, Ashes soon regrets ever telling her father about the stash but, she still wants to help him. Their trust is put to the ultimate test once he tells Ashes that she has a choice to “borrow” the money or if she can’t get it he will leave. Ashes has her mother’s trust and father’s trust in her hand. Her father has shown that he is irresponsible, and is untrustworthy but we don’t know what she has chosen because the author left with a cliffhanger.
In conclusion, with all the events in the story, the author has shown us that even though you are suppose to trust someone doesn’t mean they are trustworthy. Ashes at first did not believe her dad was a bad person as her parents were arguing about her nickname, she started to understand as her father revealed he was and debt and insisted to steal, and finally the moment of truth once Ashes has a choice to steal from her mother or let her father go it
