Ashes, the girl of a divorced family, has to make the most family breaking decision of her life between her Mom and Dad. Ashes has to choose to help her Mom keep the money or steal the money for her Dad. Ashes stole the money from her mom for many reasons to be told. First, she believes in her Dad more than her Mom, secondly, Ashes wants to protect her Dad, and finally, she needs to get the love from her Dad. First of all, she believes in her Dad more than her Mom because her Dad always promised her things while her Mom never promised her anything, “Dad always used to promise me the stars for a necklace…” (Pfeffer 1) “...but she just called me Ashleigh-a name she didn’t like- and never promised me anything.”(Pfeffer 1), they say this about Ashes parents because the author wants to show how much her Dad cares about Ashes while her Mom didn’t do anything except for giving her what she needs.
