District Common Assessment Divorce affect fifty percent of kids relationship with their parents.“Her earthquake money.Her martian money what should I do…” Ashleigh is faced with one of the hardest decision to steal money for her dad or to leave the emergency money but, Ashleigh makes the wrong decision and steals the money which she knows is morally wrong.Ashleigh steals the money because she doesn't feel she gets the same love from her mother as much as her father gives her,her pops also fills her up with compliments to manipulate her , and the symbolism in the sky throughout the story tells her decision and how she feels about each parent. Ashleigh feels as if though her mother doesn't care about her and her father is the only one who truly loves and cares about her well being. “And I realized he still called me Ashes where my Mom couldn't hear him to be annoyed”-pg 1.This shows Ashleigh that her dad loves her that he doesn't care how people look at her nickname it …show more content…
“ I looked out the window and saw only the ash-grey sky.” (pg.4) . Ashleigh’s dad calls her Ashes a lot during the story. The dark ash sky represents that Ashleigh listened to her father and that she chose to steal the money so, he can start his new life. Whenever the protagonist describes the time with her dad it's always warm and sunny even though it's cold throughout this story. Ashleigh feels loved when she is with her maternal male figure she feels comforted and protected by him. Ashleigh feels as if all her worries and problems have gone away . The narrator feels as if her days spent with her mom are rainy. Beth is letting the reader know that when the narrator is with her mom she feels like her mom is keeping her inside she feels trapped. When she with her guardian she has no freedom to be herself it also shows, that Ashleigh dreads the time spent with her guardian
