Stereotypes are often cast aside in the shadows of society. They are misconceived labels placed upon different types of groups by society. In particular, stereotypes place unfair characteristics among asians that leads to misrepresentation of who asians really are. In turn asians are judged by stereotypes instead of their character. Asian stereotypes are a problem that illuminates false images of asians and imposes substantial burdens upon them.
The general stereotypes about asians are that they are overachievers, intelligent, hard working, socially awkward, and foreign. “Among the asian stereotypes, the model minority stereotype” is the most misrepresentative image of asians (Qin). According to a “recent Ascend research report, ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’, analyzed employment data from large Silicon Valley companies found that white men and women were 150% more likely to be executives than their Asian Counterparts” (Peck). Although a lot of asians are graduating on the top of their class, they still have trouble achieving “top leadership positions in their chosen fields because there is a huge achievement gap in the workplace” (Wan). Stereotypes have an influence in cases like these because of the stereotypes that asians are passive and lack leadership skills; so they cannot achieve high position jobs. It also leads in inequality in the work force for asians because they worked so hard to become the top of their graduating class to end up getting low position jobs.
