Visual perception is the way in which humans see things around them. This form of perception develops from infancy to adulthood. The way in which we see things has been researched by many theorists, one of which i am going to discuss, is Robert Fantz. Early research: He began by investigating the perception in chicks. He presented chicks with a number of small objects of different shapes and recorded the number of pecks the chicks made at each of these objects. Information found on Assignment 6 Lesson piece. Depth perception: Depth perception is the way in which a child recognises the height they are at, for example, the depth of which they may fall. Examples of depth perception, include, stairs, or furniture including beds and chairs. Adults should be incredibly vigilant when children are learning depth perception, as their level of intelligence in this area comes only over time and through trial and error. Trial and error may mean they experience falls, due to misjudgement, where they learn from their mistakes. The visual cliff: Gibson and Walk designed a piece of experimental equipment which they call the visual cliff. This consists basically of heavy glass which is supported a foot or more above the floor. A piece of patterned material is placed flush to the undersurface of half of the glass. Gibson and Walk tested 36 infants aged from 6 to 14 months on the visual cliff. Each child was placed on the centre and his mother called him to her from the cliff side and then the safe side. All of the 27 infants who did move crawled out on the safe side at least once: only three of them crawled over the cliff
