In today’s society, when someone mentions a mental institution most people picture a dark, dirty, and horrendous hospital like structure. While this image may at times be accurate, this was not always the case. Mental institutions, otherwise known as asylums, have a past full of ups and downs. During different time periods standards for care in these facilities fluctuated from proper care to improper care. With more of an understanding of these mental abnormalities we have a better chance of finding solutions and resolving them.
I am a frequent volunteer at Hillingdon Refugee Support Group. This entails being committed to helping those less fortunate by assisting them to adapt within a new community, as well as empowering young people to make decisions and develop an improved support network. The Traumatic Experiences of Immigrants Immigrants across the world receive many types of discrimination and backlash in foreign countries. Many immigrants suffer through traumatic experiences when traveling to a new environment because of the effects xenophobia has on immigrants. Xenophobic actions can greatly impact the lives of immigrants, resulting in emotional pain and also intrusive thoughts. The xenophobic actions immigrants can experience can cause them to feel unwelcome, which can deal a heavy blow to their mental health. Immigrants can also experience xenophobic actions that can turn into physical trauma, leaving them with injuries or bruises.
After reading the short story “A Rose for Emily”, the reader will discover that the main character, Miss Emily, is one very strange woman. Of course, any reader will find themselves wondering just what in the world was wrong with Miss Emily. As the reader searches for the answer to this question, they find themselves thinking back to the things that could have very well affected Miss Emily’s mental state. These events include Miss Emily’s father, her suspected lover, and the rest of the community.
