Athena- Goddess of Wisdom, Military Victory, and Womanly Arts Athena, goddess of wisdom, military victory, and womanly arts. She was a patron of Athens and was the half sister of Hercules. Originally Athena was pre-eminently the goddess of the city, the protector of civilized life, of handicraft, and agriculture. Athena's parents were Zeus and a nymph known as Metis. Athena wore a Aegis, and a goatskin shield which had a fringe of snakes covering it. The snakes came from Medusa's head, and was a gift from another god.
The birth of Athena was a favorite topic of Greek vase painters, because of the many different stories of how she came about in the world of Greek gods and goddesses.
