In an example of a situation where Athena assists him on his journey, she help Odysseus realize that he is home. The book shows this in, “now came Athena towards him, in the shape of a young shepherd […] ‘Welcome, my friend!’” (Homer 153). She helps him get to a place where he can meet his son and discuss their plan for the suitors. While doing all of this, she is disguised as a shepherd.
She says that he will show his worth by giving him his sword and shield and then put him into battle. Odysseus is also described as brave because he taunts Polyphemus after he escapes and calls him names. According to the mythology metis was going to have 2 kids one of them was so powerful that it would over through Zeus. Zeus being afraid, he tricked metis into Turing herself into a fly and swallowed her. Metis already was pregnant with Athena and made armory in her stomach. When that happened Zeus got such bad headaches, he told Hephaestus to bang his head with an axe. When he did, Athena came out of Zeus cracked head, fully grown up and armored.
The myth is the story of Perseus, the son of Zeus and Danae. As a baby he and his mother were forced into a coffin by his grandfather, Acrisius, and were sent out into sea to perish. They didn 't drown, however, they floated to land until they were found by a king, Polydectes. The king fell in love with Perseus ' mother and wanted to wed her, her refused so she could spend time caring for her son. After Perseus had grown into a young man Polydectes sent him on a mission to kill Medusa in a hope it would bring Perseus ' death, the king thought that with her son gone the woman she loved would marry him.
Athena is a major character throughout the book of The Odyssey and is known as the goddess of wisdom and battle. Throughout the course of the book, it is evident that Athena has a weak spot for the main character, Odysseus. Odysseus is trying to return home after the Trojan War, as the other Greek hero’s have already done, however he faces multiple challenges a long the way. Fortunately, for Odysseus, Athena was there to guide him through a few of these troubling situations.
On the island Zeus was raised and taken care of by nymphs of the sea. When Zeus got older and matured he decided to over throw his father. He wanted to over throw his father to take revenge for swallowing his brothers and sisters. Zeus also wanted to overthrow Cronus to take charge and become powerful. He become friends with a titaness or nymph Metis.
Recognizing that wisdom is necessary for order, Zeus took as his first wife Metis, “wisest of all, of gods and men”(Theogony 888). Then, when Metis was about to give birth, Zeus, “deceived her mind / ...and thrust her down / into his belly” (Theogony 890-92). Through the consummation of Metis symbolizes Zeus acquires wisdom. The unity of Zeus’ strength and wisdom which Zeus acquires by his cunning brings order to the cosmos. Thus, from the unity of strength, wisdom, and cunning, comes order.
Athena disguises herself and reveals to Telemachus that his father is alive but tells him to sail in search of more information, “Do you hear me: As a goddess, yesterday/ you came to us, command me to sail/ across the shadowed sea, that I might learn/ about my long-gone father’s coming home” (32). Athena has Telemachus best interest at heart and by commanding him to find his father she played a big role in helping him shape himself and grow into the man he was destined to be. He takes Athenas’ advice and finally comes to the realization that he needs to stand up to the suitors, “Throughout all those years/ when I was still a boy, you suitors squandered/ the riches that were mine. But I am grown;/ and listening to the words of others, I/ can understand…” (33). Telemachus then sets off to find more information on his father and his possible whereabouts “I’ll come fetch what you’ve prepared.
Also, when Odysseus returned home, she turned him into an old man, a homeless beggar. Homer narrates that, ¨Athena disguises Odysseus as a beggar and directs him to the hut of Eumaeus.¨ She plans with Odysseus and Telemachus, helping them to get revenge on the suitors. Athena had a huge amount of power, and the strength of her character helped Odysseus throughout his journey.
In The Odyssey, by Homer, Athena influences the lives of Odysseus and his family. In Greek mythology, gods challenge and control mortals. Gods also provide support to mortals and thus, mortals depend and act on behalf of the gods and their decisions. Athena, daughter of Zeus, is the goddess of wisdom, and both Telemachus and Odysseus benefit from her power. Athena possesses the ability to disguise herself and others, and this skill allows her to give advice and guidance.
First, we saw this direct interaction between Athena, the goddess of wisdom and Odysseus’ son, Telemachus. Although there are many Greek mythical characters , the character that interest me the most is Pandora. It could have been because she was the first woman human ever created, or maybe what her curiosity caused. according to mythology, this character is the cause for all the evil on earth.
