During the time of the Ancient Greeks, mythology proved to be a crucial element to Greek culture. Athena, a powerful goddess often talked about in numerous works of mythology, demonstrates wisdom and strategy as her craft. Besides this, she excels in multiple different techniques, which include her incredible abilities of disguise and weaving. On the other hand, a girl named Arachne also shows talent in spinning and weaving. Nymphs from all across Greece would travel great distances to admire her beautiful woven tapestries. However, she illustrates an abundant amount of arrogance. One day, Arachne spuriously claims that Athena did not instruct her in the art of weaving, and even goes as far as suggesting that her skill of weaving outmatches Athena’s. The people around Arachne cower in fear at this claim, as if Athena herself would bring upon her formidable wrath at the statement. …show more content…

Athena then realizes that she must put a stop to Arachne’s ridiculous claims, and decides to warn her of the superior capabilities that immortals possess. To do so, Athena uses the guise of an elderly woman and goes to Arachne. Athena cautions Arachne never to challenge the gods, and advises her to rescind her unkind words about the immortals. These words anger Arachne, and in her rage she insults the old lady and challenges Athena to a weaving contest. At this implausible offer, the old woman converts into her true form as the goddess Athena. Everyone in the room bows down to Athena in wonderment, except for Arachne.
