Toni Smith, The D-III Athlete That Got National Attention Toni Smith was a female basketball player at a D-III college that helped jump-start the silent protests that we still see today during the national anthem. The last time I checked, D-3 athletes don’t get national attention too often unless something amazing happens or something that causes waves happens. This was something that caused waves back in 2003. Toni Smith was trying to justify that she is able to do this, but she never clearly states why she is doing this peaceful protest. The author begins by talking about how the fans are entertained during the whole time the game is going on. She also mentioned all the advertisements that the fans watching the event see all over the area. Then she changes course to talk about all these things that there are room for in athletics, such as “sex, alcohol, violence, and religion.”(Smith) Then she mentions that the line is drawn at politics. She then states that the national anthem is always played during pregame and that we look at a flag that means something different to everyone.
