“Lest you think I exaggerate, look up the case of the two athletes at the University of Iowa who started a T-shirt screening business and were threatened with ineligibility by the N.C.A.A. because their website mentioned that they met because they were both — brace yourself — swimmers” (Rosenberg, 2017). Paying collegiate athletes would also help develop athletes better if they do stay longer instead of rushing to go pro and then failing to be something because the they were not for that type of exposure. Injury is another reason why they should get paid. No matter what sport you play, you’re always putting your life on the line when you play that sport. “Paying players could guarantee them a degree of financial security, and prevent some from leaving prematurely” (Labaton,
“Those who believe college athletes should be paid argue that they are “employees”, as they commit just as much time, if not more, to their respective sports than the average person does with their job” (“Should College Athletes…”). 43.3 hours is about the time that an average college athlete spends on lifting and practicing for a sport, studying, finishing homework, and being in class (Deutsch). In fact, the average college football player gives up over three hours more than the average American works each week (“Should College Athletes…”). This demonstrates that athletes spend all their time training for their sport and do not have time for a
For one thing, those people worked hard for the money they made. Athletes make tons of money by hitting a ball with a stick of wood or throwing a ball around. Next, these people don’t make that much more money than pro athletes. For example, Michael Fascitelli made $64.4 million in 2013. Another example, Ralph Lauren in 1976 earned $7.5 billion.
The first point is even though college athletes have the same hours as a full-time job, athletes should not be paid because it would take money away from other activities. If athletes get paid $100,000 for every football player, there are usually 20 - 30 players per team. $2,000,000 to $3,000,000 goes to the football team yearly. If so much money goes to the football team, how much money does that leave for other activities? “If we pay the athletes maybe we should also do it for the first violinist in the school orchestra, or the lead actor in the theatrical productions, and perhaps popular professors allocate course enrollment slots to those students who bid the highest,” Andrew Zimbalist, sports writer.
First off, if college athletes were to actually be paid, it would not be a whole lot. Most recent discussions involve the athletes getting somewhere around $5,000 a year if they even were to be paid (Goldman). It would definitely not be enough to where you would have money to live off of for a long period of time if something happened such as a serious injury. This is why the athletes are granted athletic scholarships so they get a 100% free education. What is better to have something to fall back on, a free education that can lead you to a career, or a couple thousand dollars?
Do Professional Athletes get paid too much? I think Athletes get way overpaid compared to median household income. All these Athletes are getting paid millions of dollars and people in a household make an average to fifty thousand and they work every day. Athletes only play for some time then practice and are getting paid Millions of dollars compared to people. The sport you play depends on how much you get paid so it makes a big difference on what sport you play.
After graduating from High School one may choose to further his or her education through college. People do this for many reasons. Some people do it for professional benefits, while others do it for sports athletics. This paper will be focusing on those who do go to college for athletic benefits. Specifically, this is focusing on how these college athletes do not get paid and why they should be paid.
“Cristiano Ronaldo makes $56 million a year, Kobe Bryant made $250 million a year and Barack Obama made $400,000 a year during his presidency...” (O'Connor ). Professional athletes are paid millions of dollars to play a game while police officers, firefighters, army soldiers, and even the president are paid significantly less. “It’s not shocking that public servants like teachers and police officers make less than professional athletes”(Figueroa). Compensation shouldn't be about entertainment, it should be about job importance because people are trying to make the world a better and safer place not a more entertaining place.
College Athletes Being Paid College athletes put in more hours than some careers, but should they be turning into employees of the school over students? Paying college athletes would result in a change of how they perform as students. When a college athlete goes to college, they are there primarily as athletes and put their degree on the back-burner. The athletes get their degree paid for by playing for the school. If college athletes were to receive payment, the money would most likely not be spread out evenly among the sports.
People know that doctors and firefighters save lives, while athletes play a game to make money. Even teachers pay isn’t anywhere near to athletes; they educate the generation’s youth so they can make a difference in the future. So many jobs that are very important don’t get paid as much and that money can go towards better causes. But these are only some of the reasons that pro athletes get paid too much.
It depends. The average household income in 2015 was $55,775 while Michal Jordan one of the greatest players of all time was paid 33,000,000 dollars. That is a 32,944,225-dollar difference. 32,944,225 dollars is an impeccable amount of money to be paid for one season. The best paid athlete is still a question, but the highest is no question at all.
And they do! Athletes work incredibly hard and train constantly. However, the amount of money they make is staggering. Athletes make Millions of dollars a year! Billions of dollars are spent a year to pay our professional athletes.
Are actors and professional athletes overpaid? The film industry and professional sports are regarded to be the most profitable business sector in the present scenario. The professional artists and film actors earn millions of dollars due to their talent.many people might have had a dream to be popular and earn more like they do. Despite the fact that their profession is not an easy job that could be done by common people, they are more prone to criticism resulting from their overpaid work. However, the perception on whether the professional artists and actors are overpaid or not is still a matter of concern of a majority of people.
Athletes are paid more than very important jobs such as surgeons, teachers, and even the president! Athletes don’t even do very important things, they merely entertain fans in an arena. Do they save lives, educate our future, or run our country? No, they don’t. Finally, an athlete's salary is more than an average American household makes in a whole decade.
Professional athletes are extremely overpaid for the “jobs” that they do. They only entertain for a living and get paid millions of dollars per season. Each sport is different in how they pay their athletes, and the difference in salaries from one player to another can be in the tens of millions of dollars. These athletes are paid for jobs that they only do for a certain number of games and do not even play the games over the course of an entire year. In most professional sports, they play in games for only a few months and then have a few months off.
