Major League Baseball has had a long struggle with keeping steroids out of the sport and making sure players aren’t cheating by enhancing their abilities in the game. The players that have been caught however have mostly all tried to deny the claims one way or another trying to avoid the consequences. This era, called the Steroid Era, started in the 80’s and ran roughly through the late 2000’s with no real defined start or end and PEDS otherwise known as performance enhancing drugs are just as big of a threat to the sport as they always have been. The reason most baseball players use PEDS is to get stronger and faster than normal to help their stats and make them better athletes. Although steroids were banned in 1991, testing for the substances did not start until 2003 which allowed players to freely use steroids without any major repercussions and if they were caught there still was only a minor punishment making steroids easy to use by players.
The Athletes that use performance enhancing drugs PEDs in sports has sparked serious ethical debate. A recent investigation revealed that 6 players on the North Carolina panthers 2004 Super Bowl team were filling prescriptions for steroids. Barry Bonds, the San Francisco Giants’ slugger and Golden Glove Award winner, will likely break Hank Aaron’s career home run record before the end of the 2007 Major League Baseball season.
Over the past three seasons, the NFL alone has reported over 690 concussion related injuries causing major athletes such as Ben Roethlisberger, Devonta Freeman, DeAndre Hopkins, and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie to miss significant time on the field (CNN 2015). Testing in sports have always been significant, but as of late, they have come to the forefront following the large concussion lawsuit filed against the National Football League and the countless names emerging from Major League Baseball for being linked to performance enhancing drugs. Health and player safety is becoming the number one issue for many of the professional sports leagues including the National Basketball Association and the Federation International de Futbol Association
Most of the players have decided to use steroids because it helps them to increase their muscles faster. This drug makes the players anxious and the desire for exercise is more often. Most of the fans think that the increase of home runs of the 2006 season is mostly caused by players using performance-enhanced drugs; this fact is based by earlier results of 47% of the fans agreeing on this issue conducted by USA Today/Gallup Poll (Newman, 2006). Also, the players see this like an opportunity to move faster in the system and be seen as a top player to be considering a big value on the market. This situation is so important for the fans and anyone that follows this sport.
You may think that if steroids are legalized then sports would stop being about who trains the hardest and who puts more passion and it would become into who has the best drug, you are wrong. So let me answer by making question. Do you know who Robert Mathis from the Indianapolis Colts is? No. Do you know who Arnold Schwarzenegger is?
Assess evidence that the world has entered a new cold war Definition: The Cold war is intense economic, political, military, and ideological rivalry between nations, short of military conflict; sustained hostile political policies and an atmosphere of strain between opposed countries. Hopefully soon they will get drug test that will be able to pick up all types of performance-enhancing drugs. Steroids will continue to be a big issue in the sports industry. These types of drugs should not be allowed because it gives the player a greater advantage over other players who are playing with their natural ability. Many players will take steroids to help them play better. This issue could be solved if steroids were not so easy to get ahold of.
The use of PEDs in professional sports is also an ethical dilemma. PEDs users clearly have a leg up on their competitors that they achieved unnaturally. They are taking a short cut to achieve greatness and that’s unethical in sports. Is it right to play against competitors while taking a substance they aren’t taking? Shouldn’t sports be as fair as possible to everyone?
The reason why is too many athletes are getting arrested and dying from using too much steroids. I think they should get banned and the athletes should perform to their natural ability. I also think that the athletes would perform better without use of steroids. So therefore the research and I think that performance enhancing drugs and steroids should be
In 1889, Bud Galvin became the first man to use steroids in american sports when he tried to inject hormones from animals into himself. “Charles Brown-Sequard's "Elixir of Life," which became the earliest known performance enhancing drug in American professional sports when Pud Galvin of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys used it in 1889” (VICE). Since then steroids have been a staple in american sports, especially the game of baseball. When people think of the best player in baseball many people will say without even thinking about, Babe Ruth, the great yankee slugger who hit close to 720 homeruns in what people will call the dead ball era. Babe Ruth, however may have been using some sort of performance enhancing drug when he was still playing with
Most athletes would do anything to win or be better than their opponents. The athletes that are using steroids are cheating by increasing their strength. According to www.DoSomething.org , most doses are 10 to 100 times greater than the doses prescribed. Punishments should be increased so people stop using steroids and so the playing field equals out (preposition). Athletes should be allowed to use steroids in sports, legally.
The athletes that actually work hard to be great is more honorable than a cheater. The ones that use steroids build muscle way easier and get “hulk” like strength easier and quicker than the traditional ways. Steroids or PEDs is illegal to use in all sports because if it being
“Performance-enhancing drugs absolutely give athletes advantages in strength and endurance, which helps them both in the preparation for their sport as well as the actual implementation of the skills needed in many ways for the different sports.” (Argintar) Anything that can make an athlete better in an unfair way that can not be done by all athletes should not be allowed, especially something this harmful. Anything that is not worked for and earned should not be given in the form of a pill. This also lessens the actual wonder of an amazing athlete that is not doping, because due to the amount of people doping today we just tend to assume they are using something they should not be using to be that athletic or
In conclusion, Performance Enhancing Drugs should not be tolerated in any sport, whether professional or amatuer. These drugs are highly dangerous and even lethal to all athletes who use them. It is also unfair to athletes who choose not to use these drugs, as they are performing on their hard work and talent and not relying on an “edge” to help them reach their goals. These drugs are highly addictive, just like any other street drug or alcohol and can be fatal in many cases.
Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) have been used in sports for many years. The common term for it is doping. It is one of the most important issues among professional athletes today. Doping should not be allowed in professional sports.
