Athletic training offers many opportunities and characteristics that interests me for my future career. Athletic trainers get flexible work hours, multiple benefits, many great opportunities, and much more. They get to work with various types and ages of people from children to adults and work in many different areas. Athletic trainers have a wide range of jobs. They apply protective or injury-preventive devices along with basic first aid treatment. Prior to being able to treat the injury, they also must evaluate and be able to recognize the injury. Athletic trainers try to plan programs beforehand to prevent injuries from occurring. Once the injury is evaluated and properly treated, they must plan and carry out rehab programs. A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is the minimum degree for becoming an athletic trainer, but many trainers chose to go on to get their Master’s degree. Both programs offer classroom and clinical components, such as science and health related classes or a nutrition class. The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accredits athletic training programs. Certain states require further certification, which goes through the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC). The BOC offers the standard certification test for most states for certified athletic trainers. Athletic training certification requires graduation from a CAATE program and passing the certification exam if required in your state. After you are certified, you must remain certified by adhering to all BOC standards and take continuing education courses to keep updated in the field.
