President Harry S. Truman on August 6, 1945 released a statement in regard to America’s use of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima, Japan. Seventeen years later President John F. Kennedy gave a speech regarding the Cuban missile crisis. Both events were very high-pressure situations for the United States and the Presidents that were in office at the time. On August 6th 1945, President Truman authorized the use of the first even made atomic bomb to strike at Japan, after the bomb was dropped, President Truman released a statement addressing the country. He draws on the pathos of the country by explaining why we dropped the bomb on Japan, “The Japanese began the war from the air at Pearl Harbor. They have been repaid many fold.” Then goes to show how powerful the weapon used was. “That bomb had more power than 20,000 tons of TNT. “Both science and industry worked under the direction of the United States Army, which achieved a unique success in managing so diverse a problem in the advancement of knowledge in an amazingly short time. It is doubtful if such another combination could be got together in the world. What has been done is the greatest achievement of organized science in history.” President Truman then goes and addresses not only they American People but those that were in charge in Japan with the intent into striking fear into the Japanese government “We are now prepared to obliterate more rapidly and completely every productive enterprise the Japanese have above ground in any city. We shall destroy their docks, their factories, and their communications.
