Motifs Isolation The protagonist is continuously isolated from the rest of the world around him, whether it was in his childhood or adulthood. The cinematography in Citizen Kane furthermore demonstrates the isolation he was going through. In one scene, we see Kane his childhood playing alone in the outside; the camera creates a divided shot on him and his mother with Mr. Thatcher, as they plan to send him away from home. Another scene is where; Kane is sitting by himself in the center of a room surrounded by men suited up, watching him as he opens a gift from Thatcher at his office.

Hunting then becomes a client of a therapist (Robin Williams) and studies mathematics with a renowned professor (Stellan Skarsgard). By result of the therapy sessions, Will evaluates and revaluates the relationships with his best friend, girlfriend, and himself.
Bowlby, Harlow, and Ainsworth each had unique positions on infant attachment and adult relationships. All three researchers pointed out that children become attached or unattached depending on the amount and type of love and affection they receive from birth. Each had a different way of creating their study. Harlow used baby monkeys taken from their mothers and replacing mom with either a metal or a terry cloth covered mom.

Begrudgingly, Will decides to work with Lambeau, but pushes back constantly against the professor’s attempts to help him. The film is an excellent example of interpersonal communications and the concepts within it, as well as when those concepts fail. One of the prevailing themes in the film was the perception of identity.

The movie is set in Boston and follows a 20 year-old man named Will Hunting. He was abused by his foster father when he was just a child. A reactive attachment disorder is rare disease, it is when someone was either abandoned, Abused, or put through a foster program at a very young age.

Despite possessing this talent, Will had been living his life in no direction. In order to guide Will into the right way, he was introduced to psychologist by the name of Sean Maguire (Robin Williams). Helping Will overcome his fear and cope with the world is the main plot of the movie.
Theories (Erikson & Attachment) According to Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, trust vs. mistrust, occurs in the first year of life. Erikson believed that the caregiver’s response to the infant’s cries help them develop a sense of trust, when the caregiver responds right away to the infant’s distress of crying or fussing (Mooney, 2000). Erikson believed that in the earliest years of life, mainly during infancy, patterns of trust or mistrust are formed that control, or at least influence, a person’s actions or interactions for the rest of life (Erikson, 1950). Bowlby hypothesized that children are born with a predisposition to be attached to caregivers and that children will organize their behavior and thinking in order to maintain those relationships (Bettmann, 2006).

Overview of Attachment Theory Attachment theory tries to describe the evolution of personality and behaviour in relationships and it gives a reason for the difference in a person’s emotional and relationship attitudes. In the beginning, it looked at the mechanics of relationships between children and their parents but it has since been expanded to cover the entire life of the human being (Howe, 2000). Attachment theory includes insights learned from evolutionary theory, ethology, systems theory and developmental psychology (Howe, 2001).
