Scout and Jem are very innocent and do not understand racism very well. Atticus has an unusual relationship with his kids. He cares very much for them and their moral upbringings, but he treats them like adults and is a very hands-off parent. Atticus has a black maid, Calpurnia who he considers family that helps take care of Scout and Jem. Despite the absence of their mother, Scout and Jem were raised to regard woman as equal, which is why Calpurnia is like a mother to them. Scout is much more innocent then Jem and therefore asks a lot more questions about Tom and black people in general. Atticus answers them like he would if he was talking to an adult. Scout and Jem have strong respect for Atticus, because in their eyes they see Atticus as a hero, because he puts his life on the line to defend Tom Robinson while Atticus just see's himself as doing what any moral person would …show more content…
That also didn't stop Walter Cunningham Sr. and his mob to try to come between Tom and Atticus one night. Atticus drove down to the jail house in Maycomb and sat in front of Tom Robinson's cell and read because he knew something was going to go down. Jem was worried so Jem, Scout and Dill went looking for Atticus and found him reading in front of the jailhouse. They were about to go home when Walter and his mob showed up to kill Tom. Scout ran up to Atticus scared. Atticus told Jem to take Scout home and Jem refused. He stood beside his father fearless. Scout spotted Walter and being the innocent little girl she is, she started asking Walter questions about his son and himself. Soon Walter realized that these are good people, so he called off the mob and they went home. It just shows Atticus's dedication to this case and it also shows how innocent Scout is and how she just doesn’t quite understand how things work. She's a blind eye to
