A Well Respected Man Atticus is a well respected man throughout the town of Maycomb. Although criticized openly he still continued to do the right thing for others People admired him for so many reasons. Three reasons he was an admirable person was one he was compassionate to others, he was caring, and finally he was brave. In the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” Atticus is well respected.
Heroes are not invincible, and certainly are not the ones who always win; however, a hero is someone who, despite this, is courageous enough to fight for what is right. Atticus Finch, one of the most inspiring literary characters from the highly acclaimed novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is an example of such. This classic novel is told from the perspective of Scout Finch, Atticus’ daughter, a young girl who lives in the town of Maycomb County, Alabama, in the 1930s, a town where prejudice and discrimination is rife. Mrs. Dubouse criticizes him when she said, “Atticus is a Niger lover!” (Lee 100). Atticus stands up to his neighbors' racism, knowing that in doing so, he is exposing himself and his family to difficult times.
Maycomb County, located about 20 miles away from Finch landing. The place that the Finch’s receive their social class status from of being higher and more elite than most. Social class and racism back in the early 1900’s caused many to become snobs, not all, but many. The work as a whole is shown thoroughly through the character of Atticus Finch, a model of integrity to lawyers all over, all in favor to the surroundings he grew up in around the early 1930’s, which ultimately shaped his morals traits as a racial hero in Harper Lee’s novel. Years after the Civil War ended and slavery in the United States was over, racism was still looming large over the country, especially in the South where American’s highly supported slavery.
Why did Atticus defend a black man? Justice and being given the chance of a fair trial. Atticus Finch believed that everyone, black or white should be given the chance, to be proven not guilty. Even though some people thought Atticus was wrong in defending Tom Robinson, Atticus knew it was right to defend Tom because he knew everyone deserved a fair trial.
Many people think that odysseus is a better hero but i think that Atticus Finch is a better hero. Atticus was born in a small country named Maycomb County. He was a lawyer in that county in the 1930’s (The Great Depression). He had a rape case that he was defending and the person he was a defending was a black man.

Lastly, Atticus’ compassion for Tom Robinson allows him to act the right way, even if it is against society's beliefs. Atticus tells his two innocent children, “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 39). Not one other lawyer wants to take the case, but due Atticus’ compassion for Tom, he sympathetically pities him, which allows him to view the world differently. In Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, the character Atticus Finch is different from the other men of Macomb in many ways. One major difference is him displaying positive qualities not seen in Macomb's other men. It can be argued that Atticus represents a new concept of masculinity because of his personal qualities. There two are qualities that strongly support this argument; Atticus is respectful to all people and he does not do the daily tasks that the other men do, although some people argue that his behavior is only because he is under pressure to set an example for his kids. Atticus one of the few respectful characters in To Kill A Mockingbird which sets him apart from the other Maycomb men.
Respect Is Key In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee represents that respect is treating others the way one wants to be treated even though someone may be hard to respect. Social justice requires respect because being respectful to someone could help the situation. The character of Atticus Finch demonstrates respect by respecting the outcasts, gender, and different races. Atticus is respectful to the outcasts such as Boo Radley.

He knows everyone in his hometown of Maycomb and treats his fellow citizens with respect. He cares especially about his family and attempts to get rid of all the bad feelings surrounding his beloved family. As a lawyer, he knows how to defend himself with words, while at the same time, knows when not to speak. Atticus Finch is a man who focuses on protecting the ones he knows and loves through his appearance, words, actions, and knowledge of others’ opinion on him.
How to kill a mockingbird is an amazing book in that it portrays the good, innocent sides of humanity as well as the evil, perverted parts of humanity. Maycomb has character types of all kinds. Scout, the young girl shows the story through her innocent eyes as her father, Atticus, works to be an honest and true man. Most people in Maycomb don’t see from points of views of others and tend to be very hypocritical from limited minds. Those who see differently, like Boo Radley, are able to see the beauties and dark sides of others.
In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Atticus is a lawyer in Maycomb Alabama. He Has two kids, Scout and Jem. His wife died when Scout was only two years old. Atticus is not only respected by his children but his community. Atticus teaches his kids valuable lessons throughout the story.
