In the story “Under the Influence,” Scott Russell Sanders. He tell you in detail about his father’s excessive abuse of alcohol, and the transformation that transpired. However, as he grown older he realized his father didn’t only have impact his mother, his sister and his brother, but also how it is affected his own relationship with his own children as well. Many of the townspeople try to get Atticus to pull out of the trail, but he decides to go with his conscience. The historical fiction novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, uses Atticus Finch as an inspiration and role model for defending racism and prejudice.
To Kill a Mockingbird is full of heart wrenching and painful moments that shaped and defined each and every inhabitant of Maycomb, Alabama. Atticus Finch, the father of the main protagonist, once said, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it," (Lee 51). This was a lesson he taught to Scout, the narrator and main protagonist of the story. Scout never fully grasps the idea of this concept until the very end of the story, but throughout the story she exhibits this lesson and is empathetic without even knowing it. No character felt others emotions quite like Scout, even if it was right away, a little while after, or even the whole book.
Atticus Finch is an archetype of personal bravery and his bravery is demonstrated again and again throughout the novel. Atticus not only takes Tom Robinson's case, he defends him vehemently setting himself against the prevailing attitudes and customs of Maycomb. Mrs. Dubouse criticizes him when she said, “Atticus is a Niger lover!” (Lee 100). Atticus stands up to his neighbors' racism, knowing that in doing so, he is exposing himself and his family to difficult times.
During the 1930’s, a great depression swept across America. A man by the name of Atticus Finch, district attorney of Maycomb county, resides in the small town of Maycomb during this time with his two children Jeremy Atticus Finch and Jean Louise Finch also known as Jem and Scout. As the district attorney he is called upon to defend a black man by the name of Tom Robinson who was accused of raping a white woman. Although he is highly respected through the town, the town resents him for doing so even tho it is his job as district attorney. The people of Maycomb respect Atticus Finch because he speaks for justice while they do not have the courage to and for the simple fact that he undoubtedly stands up for what he believes is right.

Every day in our lives, heroes are all around us. They may not be what society tells us is a hero, like Superman or Batman. They do not wear fancy costumes or have super powers. But these heroes change the lives of the people around them, for the better. In conclusion, I do not think that you can consider Atticus Finch a heroic character. I say this with respect to Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee, it really gave me a true insight on who Atticus Finch actually was from the perspective of the person who created the character. Although He tried to get the people of the town of Maycomb to open their minds to accepting everyone no matter the race, creed and gender and to open their eyes to seeing that the way are living is very chauvinistic, bigoted and flat out prejudiced. Atticus also embraced equality and freedom when no one else would, he strayed away from the social norms of the Southern United States, regardless of the consequences he knew he would eventually succumb to. According to the Webster’s dictionary, a hero is defined as a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements or noble qualities. Atticus Finch defines heroism as “when you know you’re licked before you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” Atticus was the only one that stood up for Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape. He did it, because he knew it was the right thing to do, even though there was a large possibility that he wouldn’t win the case.

Different types of prejudice are present throughout the story and each contribute to how events play out in the small town of Maycomb. Consequently, socially disabling the people who fall victim from living their life comfortably in peace. Boo Radley and his isolation from Maycomb County, the racial aspects of Tom Robinson, and the decision Atticus Finch makes as a lawyer, to defend a black man has all made them fall in the hands of Maycomb’s prejudice ways.
