The definition of heroism changes with the context, time, and point of view. The archetype of heroism is defined as someone who is strong, intelligent, brave, and daring. “You may choose to look away, but you may never say that you did not know” (William Wilberforce). In To Kill a Mockingbird Atticus Finch juggles being a single father to his two children and practicing law in his small town. For example some people might not think of him as a hero because he doesn't do everything an example of this is when Scout says “ Our father can’t do anything”(89). However there are many things Atticus can do like, he's one of the most honest people and he is very wise and modest. In conclusion Atticus may not fly around in a cape or shoot lasers from his eyes but he is still a hero just in a different way. Maybe that’s the true definition of being a hero—overcoming adversity and keeping those you love safe, while teaching them respect of not only themselves, but of
Atticus, however, did what he knew was right and defended Tom with passion. Atticus’s choice to defend Tom was heroic, but had major consequences for his kids. Amongst other things, such as almost getting Jem and Scout killed and letting them run free without
Maycomb County, located about 20 miles away from Finch landing. The place that the Finch’s receive their social class status from of being higher and more elite than most. Social class and racism back in the early 1900’s caused many to become snobs, not all, but many. The work as a whole is shown thoroughly through the character of Atticus Finch, a model of integrity to lawyers all over, all in favor to the surroundings he grew up in around the early 1930’s, which ultimately shaped his morals traits as a racial hero in Harper Lee’s novel. Years after the Civil War ended and slavery in the United States was over, racism was still looming large over the country, especially in the South where American’s highly supported slavery.
A hero can mean many different things. It could be a man unknowingly be chosen and rise to the point or a man that chooses to be the hero. But is the man that chose to be the hero really going to do the heroic things oppose to the man chosen on the spot. In Metress 's literary criticism, he suggests that Atticus was not a model of moral courage. The critic 's argument is invalid because Atticus did not need to volunteer because Judge Taylor already knew Atticus 's standpoint and work ethic.
Every day in our lives, heroes are all around us. They may not be what society tells us is a hero, like Superman or Batman. They do not wear fancy costumes or have super powers. But these heroes change the lives of the people around them, for the better. Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird is the charismatic, understanding father of Scout and Jem Finch as well as a hard working lawyer in Maycomb County, Alabama.
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the protagonists, Atticus Finch, is the number one hero, according to the American Film Institute’s 100 years... 100 heroes & Villains list. (can we make this a citation) Whether people agree or not, there is a copious amount of examples from the book which explain why Atticus deserves this honor. Atticus is a great illustration of what a hero is. He is a fictional character that everyday people should try to imitate.
In conclusion, I do not think that you can consider Atticus Finch a heroic character. I say this with respect to Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee, it really gave me a true insight on who Atticus Finch actually was from the perspective of the person who created the character. Although He tried to get the people of the town of Maycomb to open their minds to accepting everyone no matter the race, creed and gender and to open their eyes to seeing that the way are living is very chauvinistic, bigoted and flat out prejudiced. Atticus also embraced equality and freedom when no one else would, he strayed away from the social norms of the Southern United States, regardless of the consequences he knew he would eventually succumb to. Even with all of this
Hero: A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities; however, heroism is not synonymous with perfection. Man can be a hero in spite of having some flaws. This is apparent in The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, a story about the Salem Witch Trials in which Abigail Williams accuses dozens of innocent people of witchcraft. Despite being flawed, John Proctor, Reverend Hale, and Elizabeth Proctor can demonstrate their heroism in The Crucible. John Proctor is shown to be both a hero and a flawed man in regards to his lechery.
Atticus Finch is portrayed as great parent in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The way Atticus Finch acts at home and on the streets provide a good role model for Jem and Scout. He is a parent who always does the right thing and stays true to himself and to his children at all times. Atticus is a positive role model for his children because he is the same character wherever he goes and whoever he talks to. When Scout misinterprets Miss Maudie’s words she attempts to defend his father about how he does not do anything at home different than what he would do at work.
The Epic Hero & The Equal Hero Odysseus & Atticus Finch fought hard fights for what they believed in, putting family, friends and their own safety at stake. Odysseus fought for his side in a war, abandoning his family for years and having controversy with the gods. Atticus Finch fought for the rights and freedom of an innocent black man in a racist town, putting his reputation and his family’s name at risk. They are both dedicated fathers who fight for their children whenever they need to, Odysseus with Telemachos, and Atticus with Scout and Jem. Scout and Jem mean the world to Atticus and he tries at every chance to set an example for them while Odysseus is lacking for a long period in Telemachos’s life.
What do you understand about your father’s case? Well, Ever since it’s become known that Atticus is going to defend Tom Robinson Jem and I have been criticised everywhere we go. Just a few weeks ago Mrs Dubose had called him a “nigger lover” and, even Francis had the nerve to call him that.
