Introduction I. Pulitzer Prize-winning American playwright, August Wilson, wrote about the African-American experience in profound way. He also founded the August Wilson Red Door Project to help change the racial ecology of the city of Portland through theater, film, literature, music, art, and dance. A. The project’s philosophy states: “All people, regardless of personal, cultural, and social history, internalize values and beliefs of the world they have been raised in. While some of these values and beliefs enable creative achievement and success, others create a sense of profound limitation and self-doubt.” B. The term “internalizing problems” refers to problems with emotions that can be caused by difficulties regulating negative emotions. Some of the indications of internalizing problems are shyness, being withdrawn and low self-esteem. B. Depression and anxiety disorders have long been recognized in young children. adolescents and adulthood due to lack of support, traumatic experiences and neglect. There is no one that is untouched at some time in their life from experiencing the effects of internalization. C. As many as one in 33 children and one in eight adolescents have clinical depression. (Center for Mental Health Services, U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, 1996). Depression is the cause of over two-thirds of the 30,000 reported suicides in the U.S. each year. Then, once you’ve identified your stressors, you can work out a plan to resolve the problems and reduce the stress and anxiety associated with them. D. Journaling helps control your symptoms and improve your mood. 1. It can help an individual to prioritize problems, fears, and worries. 2. It can help a person keep track of varying symptoms on a daily basis so that you can recognize triggers. 3. It can give someone an opportunity in identifying negative thoughts and behaviors. III. There is no right or wrong way to keep a journal. A. Write down not only life’s positive events, but the negative or stressful events as well. B. Every person’s journal is different. C. There are a variety of choices for choosing a journal.
