Ria: The topic that’s causing controversy and riots all around the world, the burning question, “should same sex marriage be legal?” Countries such as England, New Zealand and Ireland have recently legalised same sex marriage, adding to the other 20 countries who support it. However there are still 79 countries who have not recognised this law, Australia being the country to have the most pressure at the moment to change this. A recent poll conducted by Australian Marriage Equality concludes that 64% of Australians support marriage equality, a huge jump from the 2004 statistics stating only 38% of people supported these rights. A booklet that contains answers to common question about marriage would also be distributed. Even after doing so a majority of Christians (53%) still support marriage equality. However a vast majority of people agree with Father John as an organisation called the Australian marriage forum have made headlines as they promote heterosexual marriages as opposed to homosexual ones. Some of their main campaigns and slogans being “Is it equality if you force some kids to miss out on their dad?” and ‘All relationships matter. But not all relationships are marriage”. Their TV commercials have aired all around Australia and have been able to do so by the nation’s donations to this organisation. We contacted the main executive for Australian Marriage Forum to ask him some questions, this was what he had to say. “We are disappointed with the one-sided debate which sees 'marriage equality' only in terms of adult rights, and we urge our fellow Australians to consider the rights and needs of the child as well. The male-female pair bond is something 'given' by nature, not something invented by society. Therefore marriage is beyond the authority of any political party to re-define.
