There are many leaders in this organization from the top down. The National Football League was known as a nonprofit organization when it first began in the year of 1920. “The 14 men huddled inside the Jordan and Hupmobile automobile showroom in downtown Canton, Ohio, on the night of September 17, 1920, were finally ready to strike a deal. They had come to Ralph Hay’s dealership not in search of a new set of wheels, however, but a new professional football league to save them from themselves.” (Klein,C). This marked the beginning of an explosive organization that would soon soar to a billion-dollar money maker. “Authoritarian leadership is a leadership style in which the leader dictates and controls all decisions in the group and task. Often referred to as Autocratic leadership, authoritarian leadership is about control, organization and discipline and while it still has a place in the leader’s toolbox, it was regarded as the most prominent style almost one hundred years ago.” (from http://www.educational-business-articles.com/authoritarian-leadership/). These two leadership styles go hand in hand. As said in the article, the authoritative leadership style has been around for over a hundred years and was known as the most dominant style but in the system that Roger Goodell is in, this will not work. A constant misuse of power has not gone the right way ever in history. It will eventually lead to the power user’s downfall. In the Leadership text book, it talks about managing up. If Mr. Goodell would open his mind to all the criticism that surrounds him, maybe he could learn how to be a more efficient and a better known leader in the community. With that being said, there are many people, player coaches in the league that give recommendations to him and give him feedback for his decisions. This will be useful for him if he would take the criticism into consideration and be managed up. Letting the committee owners be a useful resource for his action would correlate into better decisions overall. Roger Goodell should build relationships with these members instead of being so isolated, which leads to many controversial decisions that he is now known for today. This man, because of his actions throughout the past football seasons, get booed every time he appears on the stage. For instance, the National Football League draft. Year in and year out people boo when he walks up to the podium to announce a draft pick or just to speak. “Resilience is critical to success in leadership” (Brosseau, D).
