“Because I said so”, the parents say to their children, while grabbing their arms roughly as a response. This is an example of situation between parents and children dealing with the authoritarian parenting style. Authoritarian parenting can be defined as a parenting style where parents establish expectations and restrictions that their children are supposed to follow, with little to no discussion about the controlling factors placed on the children. Children that grow up into an authoritarianism parenting style home have minimal to no involvement in problem solving challenges and obstacles they face. " We must make ourselves aware of the dangers of authoritarian parenting such as toxic stress. Toxic stress can lead to damages in a child's brain, specifically the hippocampus' ability with memory. During the educational years, parents want their children to score the best they can academically. But how will children be able to memorize productively as a result from toxic stress? Toxic stress due to authoritarian parenting also leads to weak performance and reading ability within those children learning in life. Children can not be the best they can be with toxic stress growing as an obstacle. Authoritarian parents hope to raise healthy children, yet do not realize the damage they're causing. Adolescents of authoritarian mothers seemed to have less self-esteem and life satisfaction than adolescents of authoritative parenting. Authoritarian parenting can cause a child to have lower self-esteem and general life satisfaction because a child does not get to express themselves as much and are expected to show great obedience for rules and regulations set by parents. A child should be able to be involved and express themselves while parents should have explanations instead of just consequences. Unfortunately, this is not an important factor in authoritarian parenting styles. In another article “Asian parenting styles and academic achievement: views from eastern and western perspectives”, Asian parents that use authoritarian parenting tend to be less supportive of a child’s social needs and interests that the child may want to go after and pursue. A child has interests to pursue, but authoritarian parents make almost every decision for the child.
