The biography called, Exiting Nirvana: A Daughter's Life with Autism was written by Clara Claiborne Park. This story was written about her autistic daughter's life. Clara talks about how her daughter, Jessy as an autistic adult. Jessy was born in the late 1950s, autism was not well understood during this time. Jessy was officially diagnosed with autism at the age of three.
Around 1% of the world’s population has autism spectrum disorder. Christopher Boone and Temple Grandin are apart of that 1%. My class read the book The Curious Incident of the dog in the Night-time and the movie Temple Grandin which each discuss the main characters strengths and weaknesses due to their autism. They are high functioning and gifted in many ways. Temple Grandin and Christopher Boone have many significant similarities and differences throughout their tales.
This evidenced by the stating the differences between the different types of autism and research behind it. Autism has once been thought to have been a mental disease, or as a result of bad parenting. This disease has been categorized as having one or two of symptoms or a large variety of them.

Furthermore, public acknowledgment of people with a disability is either ignored or spotlighted so significantly that the person feels like they stand out in the crowd unnecessarily. DiCaprio’s character, Arnie who has autism portrays stereotypical behavioural traits of a person with the disability. Throughout the film, it can be analysed that Arnie constantly fidgets with his hands, cannot sit still and has difficulty following basic instructions which can all be examined as stereotypical characteristics of a person with autism. Obviously Hallstrom had a bias and stereotypically view on the behaviour of those with autism as Arnie behaved like a child, no clear independence as his brother, Gilbert had to wash him and put him to bed every night. Socially, Arnie was in need of constant supervision as he had a tendency to perform acts that were previously recognised as inappropriate.
I choose this book as a personal curiosity as I have always wondered if I was a bit autistic. Throughout my life, I have been labeled as intellectually gifted, but emotionally challenged. As a child, I had anger issues and never had many friends, often socially awkward. So, I wanted to read a book to see how a person who does have autism was. I wanted to see if I had some of the same issues and complaints.
