On top of being mobile and broadcasting programs at the front lines, the Fifth Army Mobile Radio Station was able to efficiently counter enemy programs as well. As explained earlier for the reason why it was created in the first place, being mobile rather than a stationary radio station really help to prevent front line troops to succumbing to enemy propaganda. The most prominent of these enemy propaganda radio stations in Italy would be Axis Sally, broadcasting transmissions that directed propaganda programs to the U.S. Fifth Army and Allied troops, trying to demoralize them. The Fifth Army Mobile Radio Station swiftly countered Axis Sally’s broadcasts with their own programs and even promptly began dedicating programs to Axis Sally herself, calling her “The Nazi Sea Witch” and “Glamor Girl of the Goering Goons.” The mobile radio station was able to counter Axis Sally’s station so well, that Axis Sally even directly threaten the Fifth Army. Although since Vern Cartensen and the crew of the mobile station knew that Axis Sally and her team would tune on to them all the time, they took advantage of that and hit back with their own messages. Eventually this lead to an exchange of on-air conversation with Axis Sally, who often spoke of the station’s imminent demise at the hands of German aircraft. On one occasion, she declared “Today was the day, our planes were tracking you, and we know where you are, and you might as well say goodbye.” In reality, Axis Sally’s threat, like many others, were simply ignored. However, even with their threats, Vern Cartensen remarked how they had the greatest fans in the world that protected them, saying “Nobody could tell yah, if any of the enemy had tried to touch us, they would have been in real trouble.” Overall, Cartensen and his station did not have any worries or fears about Axis Sally, since most of their propaganda is dependent on using false
