This essay will be discussing whether or not the character Equality 7-2521’s assessment of his sins towards throughout of the book he’s from, Anthem. His assessment (that he doesn’t care about his sin, as it was decided a sin by a government he sees as immoral and corrupt) is in my opinion, correct. This thought stems mainly from the fact he documented his thoughts throughout the book, and the documents could potentially inspire other people to do the same thing he did, which Equality would probably like. At the beginning of Anthem, Equality feels ashamed with many actions of his, specifically calling many of them evil, sinful, or a “transgression”.
Equality 7-2521 is very proud as to what he invented, so Equality 7-2521 decides Equality 7-2521 wants to come clean and admit to the crimes Equality 7-2521 did. Equality 7-2521 was motivated because he wanted to become one of the smart people. Equality 7-2521 would also have more independence if he joined the World Council of Scholars. Equality 7-2521 is motivated because he has always wanted to try and find his inner self and his identity as an individual. In chapter 7 of the novel Anthem it shows that Equality 7-2521 feels unimportant to everyone around him and that he is just another person just like everyone else.
Until the age of five, Equality 7-2521 lived in the Home of the Infants, where he was often punished for fighting. From the age of five to 15, he lived in the Home of the Students. He was a quicker study than his fellow students, and although he tried to hide his intelligence, he was punished more often than anyone else. He secretly longed to become a Scholar, so he could study the Science of Things. But the Council of Vocations assigned him to be a Street Sweeper.
The council did everything to make him less of a danger to their society, such as leaving him Street Sweeper that requires no knowledge. As a Street Sweeper, Equality 7-2521 is restricted the resources needed in order to reach his goal of learning. The council also turned away Equality’s glass box because it is “dangerous” to the society. The council is Equality 7-2521’s biggest nemesis resorting in him escaping the
We know that we are evil, but there is no will in us and no power to resist it.”(Rand 2) Equality-7-2521 had struggles with remorse across the entire chapter due to the wrongdoing he committed against the supposed mentors in his life. He believes that by biting the hand that fed him, they ended up in the tunnel, penning this letter. Proceeding into the Novel, Equality 7-2521 was viewed as someone with a burning curiosity, so he was sent to the Home of the Sweet Sweepers and that’s when they made a groundbreaking discovery, they saw “iron rings as steps leading down a shaft into a darkness without a bottom.” We shall go down,” said the character International 4-8818.”
Would you break the rules of society if you believed they were wrong? Even if there was a possibility of punishment and backlash? An individual, one and only-alone, can change the world. Two individuals, Equality 7-2521 and Victoria Woodhull broke the glass ceiling with their fists raised towards change. In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand, standing alone by oneself is illegal and having thoughts that are your own is something you could get lashed or burned at the stake for.
One of the biggest rules is you cannot try to learn to anything new or invent something. Equality decides that he wants to learn more and invent new things. In this society the council decides what you will do like a road worker or a teacher. Equality gets assigned to be a street sweeper. He doesn’t like this assignment
Ayn Rand uses the archetype of Light and Darkness many times throughout her story. She uses the symbol of light to show Equality’s self-discovery. Since darkness is the opposite of this, it is the oppression and stifling he endures in the collective. The theme of this novel is finding freedom through separation from others.
We call them the Golden One” (41), and later he asks, “‘What name have you given us?’ They looked straight into or eyes and they held their head high and they answered: ‘The Unconquered’” (55). This is a defining moment in the story where Equality 7-521 is more than just a word and a number; he becomes a human being and can think of himself as an individual. At the very end of the story, Equality 7-521 talks about joy and how “there is no joy for men, save the joy shared with all their brothers . . . the only things which taught us joy were the power we created in our wires, and the Golden One.
There was one time a teenage boy with the name of juan , juan ever since he was young he would the right thing but once the got to college he got really scared and he started to think if he should go or not . At the end he decided not to go and started to work with his father in the family business. But at time people would ask him why he decided not to go to college and he would say because i was scared. His cousins one day tell him that being scared of new things is normal but at least try and fail but at least you try , you will just need to get better for next time.
Equality was a creator his mind had driven him to science he had his own mind, his own strength, and his own courage he was independent, he was brighter than the rest. Standing alone in a modern world ruled by the suppressed government he faced the world alone. In a world where being intellectual was a severe sin he possessed gifts unlike no other that were despised by the government: intellectual and psychological strength. In a world where free will was not allowed and any form of diversity was punished by the authorities. Here we find Equality on a path of self-discovery and independence.
¨We do not wonder at this new sin of ours. It is our second transgression of Preference, for we do not think of all our brothers, as we must, but only of one, and their name is Liberty 5-300. We do not know why we think of them” (Rand 41). In Ayn Randś dystopian novel, Anthem, the citizens are forced to think that they cannot have any preference, this includes liking someone more than others. Randś protagonist, Equality 7-2521, started the book falling in love with the Golden One, but as he moves toward individuality he begins to be in “love” less as he realizes there’s more than just being in a group.
Aristotle's assertions that the worst form of inequality Is to make unequal things equal is correct because forcing people to be the same in all ways can lead to restricting people to accomplish their full potential, People are also able to combine their unique talents for the betterment of all and are not restricted by everyone being the same limiting their abilities. To begin, the ability of people to be different allows them to use their minds in different ways and have the freedom to create and discover new things. In Ayn Rand's book Anthem, the protagonist of the book Equality 7-2521 lives in a world of equality where no one is allowed to be alone or explore their brains. Equality having a more Kean brain than the others starts to explore
Most who read this book would not come close to thinking these actions were wrong only the numbers of people in Equality’s generation would think this. Equality’s childhood was limited just as every other person around him. Apart from a few minor distinctions from the regular drone Equality was seemingly regular. One immense difference that changed his life was his level of intelligence. This put him above others and he was punished for being superior in more than one way.
Equality’s society at the end of the story wouldn’t include any of the rules of the city because in the old society they did not allow them to have their own thoughts or explore their own unique nature. Everything they did had to be equal, they could not favor this over that, prefer this that than that and etc. They even had a social hall, which is ironic because none of them were social, they all stayed with their own. Their society demonstrates the evilness of a dictatorship by not allowing them to show any individuality through anything, not through thought, writing or anything else to have in our society. Unlike their society we have the ability to be our own person, have our own thoughts, write and do other things that make up who we are
