When you watch a movie do you ever think about what's truly happening as you observe with glazed eyes? In the movie Avatar the native people of Pandora are described as savages living in the mud. However, theses people had their own beliefs and a tribal system with a chief and an oracle leading the tribe. This can also be said about the natives of Mesoamerica when the Conquistadors came in droves in order to obtain gold, glory, and god in the New World. Because of this the humans in the futuristic movie Avatar and the humans of antiquity can be compared by factors of economic, societal. and environmental desolation. If the Conquistadors were not actively massacring the locals and pillaging for gold, they brought over clergymen to “teach” the Aztecs spanish and about their merciful God. This lead to more problems and bloodshed. Most of the Aztecs did not want to convert and they were punished for their sins; punishment consisted of torture and in some cases death. Montezuma II was an incredibly rich emperor of the Aztec empire between 1466 to 1520. Montezuma befriend Hernan Cortes, leader of the first expedition of Mesoamerica, because he resembled an Aztec God; this would be Montezuma's and the Aztecs downfall. Hernan Cortes murdered montezuma II for his vast quantities of gold. Hernan Cortes left a trail of genocide wherever the gold led him. Because of these conquest the Spanish created a powerful empire fueled by blood soaked gold. The soul purpose for humans to step foot on Pandora was because of the extremely rare element Unobtanium. The conductive properties of Unobtanium made it twenty times more valuable than Gold. Humans both factual and fictional contain a greed for wealth, driven by selfish desire. The Conquistadors murdered for prosperity and so did the humans in Avatar.
In Conclusion, the movie Avatar is an excellent source of how humans have driven entire civilizations to extinction in the past. Avatar Shows us the environmental destruction of our distant past and the fictional future of a far off planet. The societal disruption that murder and greed causes. And the Economical Building and collapse of empires and tribes that built upon or on precious metals. Let us all take know from this movie, let the past never repeat
