BL-05 Preventing Suicide
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States contributing to 42,000 deaths every year. Therefore, one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. not to be taken lightly. In Maryland alone, on average more people die by suicide than by homicide every year. Due to the lack of coverage suicides receive compared to homicides; students are not aware of their vulnerability to suicide. Another concerning fact is that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among 10-24 year olds in Maryland. Therefore, it is a major cause of death among college-aged students. Warning signs linked to communication include talk of killing oneself, wanting to die and, talk of being of no use to others. All of these signs can be indicators of a possible suicide. In addition, warning signs linked to behavior include new or increased use of alcohol and drugs. Behaviors such as isolation, aggression and planning to leave may be signs of an attempted suicide. Lastly, warning signs linked to mood changes include signs of depression, Loss of interest in usual activities, rage, irritability, humiliation and anxiety. If any of theses warning signs are detected, students should seek immediate professional assistance.
Furthermore, student response to suicide should be cautious rather than confrontational. Therefore, developing trust is vital in preventing suicide and building connections that can encourage communication. Students should give their attention and support while, encouraging family and friends to seek professional assistance. Supporting friends and family is crucial in preventing suicide. Researchers have found that if we recognize and treat warning signs early on we can prevent
