Suicide is an ongoing issue throughout the world, and is more common in younger teens then older people. In the year of 2021, the suicide rates for maryland were 9.7/620 deaths. While this is not a large number, it still is very sad to see that over 600 people are feeling the need to do this. Within the ages of 10-24, suicide is the 3rd overall leading cause of death, and throughout the state, suicide is the 16th leading cause of death for all people. These numbers of deaths are increasing, but not by a drastic amount which is still sad. The book, I Was Here by Gayle Forman adresses the issues of suicide throughout the book using the events a friends journey to figure out why her friend killed herself. She meets new people, sees new places, and discovers surprising information. At the very beginning, we learn about what Meg had used and where she did it in a time-delay message. She had all of this figured out, but why? After Cody had gotten Meg’s email, she was very surprised and confused on why Meg had done it. “‘This decision has been made a long time coming’ she wrote in her note. A long time coming? How long is that? Weeks? Months? Years?” (Ch. 3 pg 11.) Meg was Cody’s best friend, they were inseparable. If this event had been planned out by Meg, why didn’t Cody know? These events throughout the first chapter sums together how Cody was feeling about her friend's death. As she was very confused, she was also very determined to find out anything that could have clued together Meg’s death. The use of pacing and the storyline in this first part of the book helps to piece it together to give an opening to the book and Cody’s journey. Suicide is an ongoing issue int eh wrld and knowing more about it might help others to know warning labels and help those who may need that extra support. This book was a very good book and it really did a good job at covering suicide topics and how friends can be very determined to figure out things. I would recommend you read this and find it at your local library as it was a very good and heartwarming read. Cody’s determination and the amazing journey she follows really helps to piece the read together as well. In the end, you only regret what you truly never
