In Canada every year about 4,500 people die from suicide, this is equivalent to 12 people dying by suicide per year. Even after that more people have suicidal thoughts and attempts every single day in Canada, and not just adults children too. So many young people may be wondering how we can make this rate go down, not up, and it is by educating children. Many children don’t understand the severity of and long term consequences of suicide. Suicide needs to be talked about in school.

It may be hard to believe but children do think about suicide. According to statistics Canada 2019, “in 2018 suicide was the leading cause of death among children aged 10-14 in Canada”. That means suicide killed more kids aged 10-14 than cancer, car accidents …show more content…

Everyone is affected by suicide teens could be confused, upset, angry, they might even think that they were the cause that the victim chose suicide. According to the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention-Suicide Greif in Children and Adolescents “this path can be especially confusing and frightening for children and teens who do not yet have the intellectual ability, the coping skills, and life experience to assist them in this process.” It is very hard for children to understand suicide let alone accept when someone has committed it, talking about suicide in school can help children recognize why the person did it, can take the blame off them and educate them on why suicide is bad and how it effects people around you. Additionaly after a suicide children may disclose they want to die as well. According to Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention-Suicide Greif in Children and Adolescents when children say this they don’t usually mean they want to die but that they want to see the victim again, especially if it was a family member or close friend. When children express they want to die after a suicide we need to talk about it in school because it is important to explain to them that they don’t actually want to die but see the victim again.
