Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world after cardiovascular disease. Half of men, and one third of women will develop cancer during their lifetimes (Sudhakar, 2009). Cancer is not a new disease, and has been impacting individuals since as early as about 1500 B.C. Although treatment has significantly improved over time, cancer still takes the lives of many individuals each year. Everyone has heard the term “cancer” before, but what really is it? “Cancer develops when normal cells in a particular part of the body begin to grow out of control” (Sudhakar, 2009). Mental illness was not classified as an “illness” for a very long time, and to many, it still isn’t. For some individuals, it is hard for them to understand that a mental illness, can, and often is as harmful as a physical one. In people who do not get the help they need, or who are silent about their illness, they often turn to suicide as the best option for them. This is a growing problem within society, as many young children are having mental illness symptoms, and parents nor teachers, are taking this seriously. Due to this, these individuals are committing suicide. The Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, stated that eleven people per DAY will pass away from suicide. And, a statistic that is quite shocking to me, is that around the world, every 40 seconds, someone will commit suicide (CASP, 2018). This can be changed, and it needs to be. Although mental illness awareness and help has been growing significantly, public health needs to take it one step further. As a society, we have to help those who are suffering, and make sure they know how much they are loved, and that everything will be okay. Get them the resources they may need, and if this entails the government taking money out of their budget to do so, then so be it. We must make a change, and do so
