According to www.forbes.com, there are approximately 76 million baby boomers in the United States. These are the people that were born between 1946 and 1964. Baby boomers make up one-third of the workforce in the United States. Companies like to hire baby boomers because in lots of cases they already know the job. They tend to take charge and be leaders in their job area. Younger workers often struggle to move forward in a consistent direction. According to www.management-issues.com, younger workers tend to have a harder time recognizing organizational boundaries or following the instructions of their boss. The female was doing her own thing. It seemed like she was just there for a paycheck. The male on the other hand seems very dedicated to his job. He also has been working there longer. He gives the clients the extra attention that some of them need. According to www.usnews.com younger workers grew up with cellphones, PCs and the Internet. Their lives are based on their smartphones, such as the iPhone and they can do everything with applications downloads on a touch screen. Young workers are used to instant messaging and tweeting on Twitter every day. They do not consider these things distractions from work. They think that it is just multitasking. Technology takes time away from work and others may find it distracting as well. The perfect example of this is when the female that I observed is texting while at work and not looking at her surroundings. According to www.entrepreneur.com, older workers are more efficient and confident about their work because they have experience that younger workers do not have. For example, the male that I observed has been working there longer than the female. In most cases, older workers are more mature than younger workers. They understand what it takes to get the job done. Setting an example is very common in older workers. They have younger and new coworkers who are watching them as an example to follow. Older workers tend to make less mistakes which reduces labor
