Is it a coincidence that this movie is made at the time of the McCarthy trials? It would be highly unlikely that this is a coincidence as both affairs were very similar. They both involve trials based on superstitions, and charge people who has done nothing that would be harmful to their society. The movie portrays certain ingredients to be more influential than others. Although some argued that the witch trials were a result of hysteria, the accusations were caused by illusionary Puritan views, restrictive women's assigned roles, unhealthy class struggles, and imperialistic wars.
Arthur Miller illustrates the thematic scheme of a slippery slope throughout the Crucible by way of the witch trials. Salem crucified those accused of witchery however, a land dispute was the root of many false claims against neighbors. For example, Francis Putman falsely accuses George Jacobs of being a wizard and when in court Judge Danforth states, “you coldly prompted your daughter to cry witchery upon George Jacob” (Miller 96). Francis Putman a man who has numerous land disputes, tells his daughter to falsely accuse gorge Jacob as a wizard, taking advantage of the slippery slope created by the trials to achieve more wealth. In addition, Judge Danforth makes impulsive decisions when prosecuting accused people, inherently causing Danforth
In everyone's life there is a moment when they have to choose from making sure what tasks are good for their pride and family, against what's the smart thing to do. At the end of the play the author shows an example of this scenario in what Proctor’s options consist of. Proctor has to choose between what his pride is and what smart decisions he should perform. The factors that help him make this decision are him already sinning, he doesn't want to sell his friends on this lie and lastly he wants to stay true to himself . In the play, The Crucible, a story told where the reader learns about lies, deceit, and hypocrisy. The play highlights how the puritans viewed witch trials in 1692. The character that was the most to blame for the Salem Witch trials and dreadful hangings, is Abigail Williams. There are two reasons Abigail Williams became the cause of all the Witch trials and hangings, the first being that she refused to admit to what she was doing in the forest with the other girls, the second was that she was resentful of the Proctor family.
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a dramatic play that expresses a very important message and that is how far people would go to save themselves from the hands of death. There are many characters in the Crucible who are guilty of taking innocent lives, but there are three major characters who, without a doubt, are the most at blame. The play takes place in the city of Salem, a city filled with people that would do anything to keep their reputation clean. Throughout the play, Miller is introducing multiple characters that experience changes in their decisions and negatively influence more people eventually leading up to the witch trials. The main point that the story revolves around is that people would rather lie and blame someone else instead of confessing and accepting the punishment.
“The Crucible” characters remind me very much of the lyrics we listen to today in our time period. In this story it displays a lot of the same characteristics in the song I have chosen, “Girlfriend” from Avril Lavigne. Throughout the song Avril displays a lot of hate for the other women who at this point is committed to the man she wants. Which displays a lot of the character that I have chosen, Abigale. Throughout the song she states, “I don’t like your girlfriend, I think you need a new one.”
The Crucible by Arthur Miller focuses on the corruption in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials. Because, of the corruption it caused a lot of people's opinions to fluctuate. It caused relationships to end, and even begin. Mr. Hale entered the town of Salem in act 1 after he was called upon by Parris after there was a concern that Betty, his daughter, was possessed by the devil. Hale was known for confirming whether they were a witch or not.
Hawthorne indicates that Parris is overreacting to the scheduled hanging of Rebecca and proctor because “at every execution [he has] seen naught but high satisfaction in the town.” What would happen to a townsperson who protested the hangings or appeared dissatisfied in any way with the courts proceedings and decisions would without a doubt be thought to be associated with the devil. Therefore they would be brought in for immediate questioning. We saw a few cases throughout the story where this happened. Despite their deeply religious values, the members of the Puritan Society in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible are equally as sinful as the rest of the world. The Puritans, known for turning to God when given any matter at hand, lay blame on the Devil, regardless of their contradictory values. By blaming on him for their wrongdoings, the Devil earns power through the Puritans restoring to involve him whenever any one thing goes wrong. Power is defined by one’s reputation, status, wealth, gender, and age; although the natural deciding factor of one’s power in the Puritan society is land, the Devil himself holds ultimate power. Despite the fact that he does not appear as a human figure, he controls the thoughts and actions of the Puritan society, serving as the ultimate threat.
Is honesty always the best policy? Are there times when dishonesty has a positive impact? In the fictional world of The Crucible, the author, Arthur Miller, explores how people can be dishonest for being purely selfish. In addition, the author shows that people can also lie for the sake of helping out others.
The way Mrs.Proctor uses ignorance to prove she right that Proctor is just going to go see Abigail Act II page 54.“With a smile, to keep her dignity: John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not.” Mrs.Proctor smiles and keeps her dignity is that. She keep her respect for herself towards Proctor also she mocks him. Trying to saying “I think not” if it was anyone in need of help he wouldn’t go.
The act of death by inequity is explored in depth within “The Crucible”, written by Arthur Millar. It is based in 1692 within Salem, Massachusetts. The play is an allegory to the McCarthyism era. The theme of death is prevalent throughout “The Crucible” and is embodied as dying for personal pride when faced with the decision to tell a lie or die for the truth. This is represented clearly through the tragic hero, John Proctor.
Who's to Blame For the Salem Witch Trails? In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," Abigail Williams, Judge Danforth, and John Proctor are responsible for the witch trials. Not only is Abigail one of the characters responsible for the witch trails, but she is the one who instigated the witchcraft fervor within Salem. John is one of the characters responsible for the trails because he has an affair with Abigail.
“Power doesn’t corrupt people, people corrupt power.” Once said by William Gaddis about the the idea of people corruption with power. William Gaddis is getting at that power itself does not corrupt people it is what they do with it. Gaddis’s quote can relate to Arthur Miller’s book The Crucible because the story shows how power can lead to corruption in this time period around the Salem Witch Trials. First Danforth has the power to do what he wants when it comes to the court. Next, Abigail shows how manipulative she can be to people.
Power and influence in society have a huge impact on the way things happen and affects perception. A prime example is the power that presidents and prime ministers have. Given this power they can effectively influence and persuade others. Power and influence is often associated with gender, conflict and roles and relationships. The importance of the power and influence can be thoroughly examined using texts that demonstrate ideas presented as truths.
