The Crucible by Arthur Miller focuses on the corruption in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials. Because, of the corruption it caused a lot of people's opinions to fluctuate. It caused relationships to end, and even begin. Mr. Hale entered the town of Salem in act 1 after he was called upon by Parris after there was a concern that Betty, his daughter, was possessed by the devil. Hale was known for confirming whether they were a witch or not. Also, he could cure them of all unnatural causes. For example, in the text Parris states, “Mr. Hale will surely confirm that. Let him look to medicine and put out all thought of unnatural causes here. There be none” (Miller 9). Hale believed that witchcraft is real and is present in Salem. In the text Hale states, “The devil is precise; the marks of his presence are definite as stone, and i must tell you all that i shall not proceed unless you are prepared to believe me if i should find no bruise of hell upon her” (Miller 38). Hale knows that Proctor is a good guy and not possessed with the devil. In the text, Hale says, “Your honor, i cannot think you may judge the man on such evidence” (Miller 91). From this, we see that Hale sees how they are making accusations based on unreliable things. Also, In the text, Hale states, “But It does not follow that everyone accused is part of it” (Miller 98). Hale finally realizes that the people who were accused could possibly be innocent. He also realizes the corruption and that nobody can do anything about it. After Proctor locked up in a dungeon for saying that the court is nothing but fraud, Hale quits.
