Have you ever been told that you couldn't do something because of your race or gender? This is what many women went through before the 19th amendment was passed, they were being discriminated because of the gender and race.During the Progressive Era, people fought to change issues such as, issues with city living, lack of right for groups of people, and working conditions. Due to the large amount of people that moved to cities, the government passed the city management law. Because of the big issues with women not being able to vote and do things because they're women the 19th amendment was passed. Due to the bad working conditions there was laws passed such as child labor law, workmen's comp law and minimum wage law. The Progressive Era …show more content…

Women were not allowed to vote, Women had to submit to laws when they had no voice in their formation, Married women had no property rights, Husbands had legal power over and responsibility for their wives to the extent that they could imprison or beat them with impunity, Divorce and child custody laws favored men, giving no rights to women, Women had to pay property taxes although they had no representation in the levying of these taxes,Women couldn’t do professions like medicine or law, Women couldn’t go to colleges because no college would accept …show more content…

Cities grew by about 15 million people in the two decades before 1900, a lot of those people were immigrants coming for jobs ( city life in the 19th century). With the over crowded cities came traffic jams, slums, air pollution, and sanitation and health problems became commonplace. For example “With few city services to rely upon, the working class lived daily with overcrowding, inadequate water facilities, unpaved streets, and disease.” (Cities during the Progressive Era) city manager hired to run each department of the city and report to the city council, and the city commissioner plan hired people to do garbage and sewage removal this was a good step for cities National Reclamation Act Provided for federal irrigation projects by using money from the sale of public lands this was good for cities because it basically solved a lot of problems like pollution and sanitation
