“Approximately one hundred billion plastic bags used every year” (Bag It). The movie Bag It focuses on how plastic is used today and the effect that it has on people and the environment. There is a significant usage of material and nonmaterial culture that are used throughout the movie. Material culture is physical objects that could belong to a person in society. This can include any buildings, vehicles, or physical objects that can be touched. Nonmaterial culture is ideas, attitudes, and beliefs of a society. Material and nonmaterial culture are connected with the physical objects symbolizing cultural ideas. Material culture that is used in the movie shows the need of plastic bags that are thought to be a necessity in our society. In the movie the idea that is shown is that “people think that plastic bags just go away” (Bag It). The thought that plastic bags just disappear when they are done with them is nonmaterial culture. What people do with plastic bags when they are done with them are that they eventually throw them out with no thought at all about what is going to happen to the bags after they are thrown in the trash. When the plastic bags are thrown out they can end up piling up in landfills or blowing away and ending up in the ocean. This thought that once its out of sight its out of mind is what is causing problems with the environment and our oceans. In the movie, the guy goes around asking people what they think happens to plastic bags when they are done using them and it shows what people think and how our material and nonmaterial culture are
