The Saving Power of God During her life as a slave St. Josephine Bakhita was protected by God multiple times. We see this when: she escaped one slave master and was sold to an different master, when she was flogged brutally and survived, when she was tattooed and then had salt rubbed into her wounds. All these tortures ended when she was finally sold to a man named Callisto Legnani. From there on her life became better. When Bakhita was first captured she was given the name Bakhita which means “Lucky One”. This was out of irony because she was captured and forced to become a slave. She was forced to walk many miles before she and her captors reached her destination. She was put in a dark storage room for almost a month before she was released and sold to a slave caravan. When her new master bought her, he shackled her to another Girl. The two quickly became friends. After eight days of speed walking they reached their destination. The master immediately had Bakhita and her friend husk corn in a storage room. Their new master left to attend to some business and left the door wide open. This created the perfect opportunity for the girls to escape. They slipped out and were free for a short time. The two girls reached a village where a “friend” sold them to a different slave caravan. She was introduced to Jesus, baptized a Catholic, and eventually entered religious life. Bakhita was grateful to the slave traders because she might not have known God if they had not captured and sold her. She said later, “If I were to meet again the slave merchants who kidnapped me and even those who tortured me, I would kneel down and kiss their hands. For if these things had not happened, I would not have been a Christian and a religious sister today. (P.55)” So her life as a slave was really a good thing rather than a bad thing.
