PURPOSE: The purpose of this memorandum is to review whether The Ballad of American Arts should be used as a recommendation for the central featured spot in the program, An Evening To Remember That What Unites America is Greater Than What Divides Us. This major cultural gala is proposed by a quartet of former United States Presidents, which include: President George H.W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, President George W. Bush, and President Barack Obama. This was at the request of Barbara Bush, who wanted to form this unique bi-partisan quartet in hopes of trying to quell the current political animosity in the present political climate. The goal of this program is to reopen and resurrect communication and civility among political leaders and citizens on each side of the political spectrum. Today’s politics have become too polarized and leaders on both sides need to compromise on policy in order for the United States to have a functioning government that benefits the very people who elected them. Even the citizens of the United States need to compromise and communicate with each other. Wynton Marsalis is an icon in music for his incredible dedications to jazz music and American culture. The ballad was originally performed at Lincoln Center in New York City in 2009. His lecture in The Ballad of American Arts conveys the history of the United States through music and historical anecdotes. Marsalis highlights unity as the central theme of the lecture. The concept of American exceptionalism is utilized in the ballad to describe both positive times and negative times when depicting the history of the United States. The Ballad of American Arts combines history, humor, and music to further comprehend America’s history and its
