When looking at the periods of dance it can be separated into Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Pre-Romantic, Romantic, Russian Classic, and Ballet Russes before we reach the Twentieth Century. Ballet began during what is known as the Italian Renaissance, and permeated French culture by Catherine de Medici’s marriage to the King of France. The very first endorsed “ballet”, Le Ballet Comique de la Reine performed on October 15, 1581, marked the beginning of theatrical and technical dance performances. During this time our first prominent ballet masters came about, including; Balthasar Beaujoyeaux, Pierre Beauchamp, Domenico of Ferrara, and Guglielmo Ebreo, to name a few. These early ballet masters created and built upon social dance and turned it into a technical spectacle.
Cole and Atkins cross their feet multiple times, moving their arms in the same motion, and then they spin. The music gives off a free vibe, like Josephine Baker, for their dance looks choreographed and improvised. I think during this time music started to slow dance, and it was not as fast of a beat. Dancing Salsa is a great way of relaxing and having a good time. Salsa evolved from Caribbean music, mainly from Cuba and Puerto Rico, into a well known and accepted type of social dance. African and Indian dances have their differences, like what they stand for, but they also are identical, like how they are expressed. Imagine you are surrounded by creative outfits, drums, and people with bells on their ankles dancing, this is how Africans dance and how they express feelings. Then imagine even more colorful people twirling gracefully with complex hand formations, this is the Indian dance. Indian and African dances are different but also have history that is the same. African dances are very essential to the African tribes because it is a kind of language to them.
The stylistic alterations that ballet has undergone is many. When ballet was created it was much more of the Romantic style of the early to mid-19th century that was much softer and less studded with virtuosic jumps and turns. However the ballet quickly turned into the athleticism of Russian folk dances that had an influence on them. The music that a traditional ballet would be choreographed to is classical music. Today the music that ballet dancers dance to can vary.
With every dance, the movements differ because every culture differs in some shape or form. Scottish country dance, for example, is dance that mostly involves the legs and feet while the upper body is not used as much except for the interlocking of arms in turns with partners. In terms of differences, although Scottish country dance is considered a folk dance, it varies to the folk dances. A majority of folk dances or national dances used movements and steps to tell a story, however, Scottish country dancing is not so much about story-telling as it is about enjoyment and socializing, which is why some people might mistake it for a court dance. The word “ballet” brings to mind words such as “grace” or “beauty” when heard by many people. The definition itself states that it is a form of dance that uses precise steps and light, graceful motions. This definition was in the minds of those who attended the Théâtre des Champs-Élysèes in May 1913, but rather they were greeted with the complete opposite. When Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Rite of Spring opened, the audience was greeted with swift, chaotic music that quickly became a whirlwind of sound. The music softened and the curtains opened to a primitive dance, causing mass hysteria throughout the theatre.
